By providing an ultrasonic irradiation apparatus for generating acoustic cavitation efficiently, it is intended to realize an ultrasonic therapeutic apparatus for generating the action of cavitation on a living body suitable for medical treatment of malignant tumors and medical treatment of thrombi and calculi, an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus for generating cavitation for emphasizing an ultrasonic echo image such as a blood flow and utilizing the reflection capability of the cavitation, an ultrasonic chemical reaction accelerating apparatus, an ultrasonic cleaning apparatus or an ultrasonic sterilizing apparatus. Irradiation focus/code signals for defining irradiated acoustic fields of a fundamental wave and a second harmonic wave as well as focus positions/acoustic pressure distribution forms of the respective waves are applied from an irradiation unit main control circuit to drive phase generating circuits. Generated drive phases are applied to drive signal generating circuits, generated drive signals are applied to element drive circuits and a group of fundamental frequency elements and a group of second harmonic elements are driven. The drive phases are controlled such that the fundamental wave and second harmonic wave are superimposed on each other in a medium near a focal point, thus generating acoustic caviation locally and efficiently.

A sensitizer for tumor treatment has a structure such that a lipophilic group and a hydrophilic group are bound to one and the same carbon atom in a compound containing a xanthene dye structure. It is important that the lipophilic group and hydrophilic group are bound to one and the same carbon atom; if they are separated from each other, no sufficient effect is obtained. Thus, the sensitizer possesses both lipophilicity and hydrophilicity. This sensitizer has a function of promoting acoustic cavitation and a function of revealing an antitumor effect and is an agent highly accumulable in tumor tissues. Thus, this sensitizer is highly selective for tumor tissues and enables the treatment of malignant tumor using ultrasound.

Another ultrasound transducer monitors a position of a target and a positional shift is inside a catheter which is inserted into a urethral tube. An imaging system drives the ultrasound probe to display an ultrasound tomographic image of a region in the vicinity of a target region. The ultrasound transducer is driven in a pulse-shaped mode at the same frequency as the imaging ultrasound and also at such timing when the imaging ultrasound is reached. As a result, a point-shaped sound source image is superimposed and displayed on an ultrasound tomographic image.

Such gas bubble-generating agent is produced by a method for producing a gas bubble-generating agent comprising the following steps of: (a) preparing a mixed solution of an amphiphilic substance, an amphiphilic substance comprising a water-soluble polymer chemically bound thereto, a hardly water-soluble substance having a boiling point of lower than 60° C. at atmospheric pressure, and a physiologically acceptable isotonic solution; (b) pressurizing the mixed solution; and (c) centrifuging the mixed solution after the step of pressurization, wherein a molar concentration of the amphiphilic substance in the mixed solution prepared in step (a) is 10 times or more higher than that of the amphiphilic substance comprising a water-soluble polymer chemically bound thereto.
