Abstract: A flexible, multi-layer filter for separating solid and liquid wastes. In a preferred embodiment, the filter includes first, second, third, and fourth layers, interconnected by appropriately spaced connectors. The first layer comprises sub-layers of parallel strands, wherein the strands in one sub-layer cross and overlap the strands in the other sub-layer to form a netting. The second layer comprises a fibrous mat, and the third layer comprises a netting like that of the first layer. The fourth layer includes a porous filter cloth. The third layer may be cut to form end and side tabs for retaining the filter inside a conventional waste container. After a semi-solid mixture of waste is poured, dumped, or otherwise placed into the waste container, liquid waste passes through the filter layers under the force of gravity. The liquid waste is channelled through the first layer along the bottom of the waste container. The liquid waste may be discharged from the container by opening a drain, or by slightly-opening a gate in the waste container. The invention is especially effective for extracting liquid waste from semi-solid materials, such as catalysts produced in petroleum refining, industrial process sludges, slurries, sewage matter, and materials collected in storm drains such as grit, rocks, leaves, silt, and dirt.

Abstract: A portable liquid-solid separator for handling sludge in bulk with an upright vessel having a bed with a drain and surrounding sides. A grate overlays the interior of the vessel, bed and sides. A filter overlays the grate, extending up the sides and overlapping the side grate. The separator is filled with a sludge which is then separated by gravity filtration and the wicking action of the filter. Liquid is drained out the bottom of the vessel and the solids are transported within the vessel. In a preferred embodiment, the vessel is a bath tub style trailer with dumping capabilities.

Abstract: A method of spreading a pulp for the purpose of drying it naturally, the pulp having a solid fraction which has a d.sub.80 of less than 100 microns. This method comprises the following steps:(a) adjusting the level of solids of the pulp to between 2 and 25%;(b) adding a flocculating agent to the pulp and mixing it with same, the amount of said flocculating agent being between two-thirds of 98% of the optimum required fo the flocculation of said pulp; and(c) spreading the mixture of pulp and flocculating agent, in the open air, in a bed the sides of which are permeable, and the bottom of which has a slope of less than 5 meters per 1000 meters, said spreading taking place 1 to 20 minutes after the adding are mixing of the flocculating agent.

Abstract: A filter pad for use in a dewatering container is presented. The filter pad is configured to fit within the interior cavity and substantially line the interior surfaces. Material, which is usually liquids and slurries, is added to the container with the filter in place and gravity is used to filter the sediment, while the water is released through a release nozzle. The solids are retained in the filter pad for later disposal. The filter pad has a portion that can be selectively opened and is configured for placement substantially adjacent the door to permit selective egress of contents of the interior cavity.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the disposal of bauxite processing wastes comprising the steps of:(a) filtering the bauxite muds in suspension coming from the washing decanter,(b) continuously washing the dehydrated filtration cake on the filter with hot water with recycling of the liquid phase containing the greater part of the soda into the basic chemical process of the bauxite treating plant.(c) treating the mud cake separated from the filter with sea water to refluidizing the muds and to neutralize the soda residues still present; and(d) conveying the inert and neutralized mud suspension, mixed with sand residual from bauxite processing in filling basins; the invention relates also to a containment basin for the exhausted bauxites obtained with the process constituted of several basin units, singularly comprising a trapezoidal cross-sectioned containment structure or embankment, elevated above sea level, with inner core of permeable sand, lined with "tout-venant" broken rocky material, contained on the outside by large dimension boulders, on the upper part of which is placed the distribution piping of the muds, with introduction of these latter in the basin unit in several different points and provided with a drainage layer on the base.
