The gear pump includes a driving pinion arranged coaxially to the extrusion screw and fixedly secured to a tip end of the extrusion screw, a driven pinion engaged with, and driven by the driving pinion and rotatable about a rotational shaft that is parallel to a rotational shaft of the extrusion screw, and a gear casing accommodating these pinions therein. The gear casing includes side plates arranged on both axial sides of the pinions and extending perpendicularly to the rotational shaft of the extrusion screw, and a casing body arranged between the side plates and enclosing a space on a radially outer side of the pinions. The rotational shaft of the driven pinion is fixedly secured to the side plates. The side plates includes a suction side plate situated adjacent to the extrusion screw and a discharge side plate situated remote from the extrusion screw. The suction side plate has a suction port arranged opposite to that side of engagement region between the driving pinion and the driven pinion, where their teeth are being disengaged from each other. The discharge side plate has a discharge port arranged opposite to that side of engagement region between the driving pinion and the driven pinion, where their teeth are being engaged from each other. The suction port and the discharge port are maintained out of an axial communication with each other by the pinions.

The method includes steps of heating molding materials in a plasticator at a predetermined temperature; mixing the molding materials to create a molten suspension wherein a majority of the reinforcing fibers remain generally undamaged; extruding the molten suspension to form a billet and then placing the billet in a compression mold and compressing the billet with the compression mold to mold a part. In one embodiment, the reinforcing fibers are distributed throughout the part.

A method of making silica loaded elastomer masterbatches or compounded productive elastomer stocks with or without the simultaneous extrusion of component profiles is provided. A twin-screw extruder is used to mix the elastomeric stock in multiple mixing zones at controlled temperatures in which a concurrent chemical reaction takes place between the silica coupler, the silica, and/or the diene based elastomer. Silica, elastomer, silica coupler, and other ingredients are fed into the twin screw extruder continuously through precise loss-in-weight or volumetric feeders. Chemical reactions(s) in the elastomer/silica based composition take place within the twin-screw extruder while the composition is mixing. The product is forced through a profile die mounted at the exit of the extruder and formed into the shape of the desired component. The maximum rate of mixing tends to be a function of the heat transfer efficiency, the conveying capacity of the screws, and the mechanical strength of the extruder.

Described is a method for dissolving PPTA or copolymers thereof in sulfuric acid using a twin screw extruder having transporting, mixing, and kneading elements with an entering zone, an intermediate zone, a mixing zone, a negative transport zone, a degassing zone, and a pressure build-up zone. The method includes transporting PPTA or copolymer thereof into the entering zone at a transport capacity low enough as to prevent sulfuric acid entering the entering zone; introducing sulfuric acid in the intermediate zone; essentially fully filling the mixing zone to allow sufficient time to mix and dissolve PPTA or copolymer thereof in the sulfuric acid to obtain a PPTA or copolymer-sulfuric acid solution; creating after the mixing zone a negative transport zone to obtain a product lock between the mixing zone and the degassing zone; creating a thin film of the PPTA or copolymer-sulfuric acid solution in the degassing zone to degas the solution; and entering the solution into the output pressure build-up zone to partially fill this zone and to leave the twin screw extruder.

A plasticator is loaded with long reinforcing fibers and materials, such as a polyester, a carbocyclic, thermoplastic polymers or mixtures thereof, and heated to a predetermined temperature. The feed is then blended and plasticated to form a molten suspension. Pressure and shear within the plasticator is controlled to provide a process that provides a moldable billet with the length of the reinforcing fibers generally preserved through the plasticating and molding operation.
