    摘要: A control system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprises a split engine control unit for operating the engine on partial cylinders when reduced engine power can adequately operate the vehicle, and first and second exhaust conduits for directing exhaust gases from first and second group cylinders respectively to a common junction to which a common exhaust conduit is connected for directing the gases to the atmosphere. A first set of an exhaust gas sensor and catalytic converter is disposed in the second conduit to be exposed to the stream of gases exhausted from the second group cylinders which are activated at all times and a second set of an exhaust gas sensor and catalytic converter is disposed in the common conduit to be exposed to the stream of gases exhausted from the first group cylinders directed through the first conduit and to the gases passed through the upstream side catalytic converter in the second conduit. Feedback mixture control operation is effected on the basis of the signal from the first exhaust gas sensor during the partial cylinder mode and a full cylinder mode in which the second gas sensor is still below its normal operating temperature. The signal from the second gas sensor is utilized for the feedback operation in the full cylinder mode in which the temperature of the latter sensor is above its normal operating point.

    摘要: An exhaust-gas purifier comprising a monolithic catalyst which is disposed in an exhaust passage of an engine proper provided with a plurality of cylinders, and which has a plurality of paths running in the direction of the exhaust-gas stream, wherein the exhaust passage is divided into a plurality of passageways opening close to the upstream end of the monolithic catalyst, the passageways being independent from each other or combined with proper others so as to form compound passageways. The part of the independent exhaust passageways corresponding to each cylinder or compound passageways is extended to the downstream end of the monolithic catalyst, substantially separated from each other, thus lowering the interference of each cylinder due to fluctuation of the exhaust pressure exerting adverse effects on each other.

    摘要: A control system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprises a split engine control unit for operating the engine on partial cylinders when reduced engine power can adequately operate the vehicle, and first and second upstream exhaust conduits for directing exhaust gases from first and second group cylinders respectively to a common junction to which a common downstream exhaust conduit is connected for emitting the gases to the atmosphere. A first catalytic converter is disposed in the second exhaust conduit to be exposed to the stream of gases exhausted from the second group cylinders which are activated at all times and a second catalytic converter is disposed in the common downstream conduit to be exposed to the stream of gases exhausted from the first group cylinders directed through the first conduit and to the gases passed through the first catalytic converter. An exhaust gas sensor is provided in the common exhaust conduit upstream of the downstream converter. A feedback control circuit is responsive to signals from the gas sensor to effect closed loop mixture control in which the air-fuel mixture supplied to all the cylinders during the full cylinder mode is controlled to the stoichiometric point so that both converters each promote simultaneous reduction of the NOx component and oxidation of the HC and CO components. A feedback control disabling circuit is provided which is effective during the partial cylinder mode for controlling the air-fuel ratio to the rich side of the stoichiometric point to promote reduction of the NOx component in the first converter and oxidation of the HC and CO components in the second converter.

    摘要: Emission gas to be scrubbed of sulfur dioxide or the like has turbulent lengthwise flow through an elongated mixing vessel. At a mixing zone in the vessel, near where said gas enters it, finely comminuted lime (Blaine Number preferably 6000 before calcining) is fed into the gas and carried out of the vessel with the gas to a cyclone separator. From the cyclone the gas passes to a baghouse at which residual lime is removed from it and it is released. A minor portion of the lime separated at the cyclone is sent to waste; most is returned to the mixing zone for recycling. Make-up lime is fed to the mixing zone from a suspension calcining furnace, reaching the mixing zone while still heated. To maintain 650.degree. C. to 750.degree. C. at the mixing zone, recycled lime may be reheated in passing from the cyclone to that zone. The total of recycled and fresh lime fed to the mixing zone is at least nine times the quantity required for stoichiometric reaction with pollutant in the emission gas and can be 40 or more times that quantity.
