In one embodiment, the damping force producing mechanism comprises a pair of restrictions in communication with cross conduits interconnecting upper and lower cylinder chambers. The conduits and cylinder chambers are arranged so as to cause a larger flow rate of fluid to pass through the restrictions when the wheel strokes involve a relative movement between the wheels than when the wheel strokes does not involve such relative movement.

A fail-safe steer angle control system includes a front auxiliary steering actuator for controlling a front wheel steering angle in response to a front control signal representing a front wheel auxiliary steering angle, a rear wheel steering actuator for controlling a rear wheel steering angle in response to a rear control signal, a steering angle sensor for sensing the steering wheel angle, and a controller which produces the front control signal based on the steering wheel angle in accordance with a predetermined first relationship, and produces the rear control signal based on the steering wheel angle in accordance with a predetermined second relationship. The controller has a fail-safe section which adjusts the first or second relationship when an abnormal condition is detected in either the front steering system or the rear steering system.

The second intake passage has at its entrance a stop valve which closes to disconnect the second group of cylinders from the induction passage when the engine load is below a predetermined value. Main fuel supply means supplies a controlled amount of fuel into the induction passage. Auxiliary fuel supply means is provided for supplying a predetermined amount of fuel into the second intake passage downstream of the stop valve for a predetermined period of time after the engine load exceeds the predetermined value.

Disclosed is a split engine control system wherein the intake manifold is segmented by a shut-off valve into a first chamber portion leading to a first group of cylinders and a second chamber portion leading to a second group of cylinders. During periods of relatively low load, the cylinders of the second group are deactivated and the shut-off valve is closed to isolate the second chamber from the first chamber to cut off air supply to the deactivated cylinders. Exhaust gases are recirculated through the deactivated cylinders so that their pumping loss is minimized. A pressure detector is provided to detect a pressure difference which might develop between the first and second chambers during the partial cylinder operation to control the flow rate of the recirculated gases until the pressure difference reduces substantially to zero.

A suspension control system for automotive vehicles automatically adjusts the damping strength of variable shock absorbers or other dampers in accordance with road surface conditions as recognized by frequency analysis of a vehicle height or vibration sensor signal. The sensor signal reflects vertical displacement of the vehicle body from the road surface and includes high-frequency components due solely to displacement of the wheels or unsprung mass relative to the road surface and low-frequency components due to displacement of the vehicle body or sprung mass. The sensor signal is filtered into these separate frequency bands, the amplitude of each of which is compared to a corresponding reference level. The results of comparison give an indication of the degree and scale of irregularities in the road surface; specifically, a high-amplitude low-frequency component indicates larger-scale bumps and dips capable of bouncing the vehicle whereas a strong high-frequency component reflects a rough-textured road surface, such as gravel. The comparison information is sent to a suspension system controller which causes actuation of the shock absorbers to a stiffer mode of operation when the low-frequency sensor signal components are relatively strong.

An internal combustion engine is disclosed which comprises first and second cylinder units each including at least one cylinder, an induction passage divided downstream of the throttle valve into first and second intake passages leading to first and second cylinder units, respectively, a vacuum tank held at a vacuum above that in the induction passage downstream of the throttle valve, a stop valve provided at the entrance of the second intake passage and adapted to move toward its closed position when connected to the vacuum tank, and a control circuit adapted to block the supply of fuel to the second cylinder unit and connect the vacuum tank to the stop valve thereby shifting the engine operation into a split engine mode when the engine load is below a predetermined value. The control circuit includes means for forcing the engine operation into its full cylinder mode regardless of engine load conditions before the vacuum in the vacuum tank reaches a value sufficient to move the stop valve to its fully closed position.
