Abstract: The present invention relates to an electronically driven pressure boosting system that is used to boost the torque output of an internal combustion engine. The system comprises an electrically driven pressure charging device, an electrical supply system for providing electrical power to drive the pressure charging device including a battery and an engine-driven battery recharger, and an electronic control system for controlling the operation of the pressure charging device and the electrical supply system. The electronic control system determines one or more allowable operating limits to the operation of the pressure charging device based on the state of the electrical supply system, and drives the pressure charging device using the engine-driven battery recharger when the state of the electrical supply system is within an acceptable range. The engine control system then isolates at least partially the battery from the engine-driven battery recharger and drive the pressure charging device using the battery when the state of the electrical supply system is not within an acceptable range.

Abstract: An auxiliary transmission in series with a first automotive transmission adds extra gears through an underdrive feature, which may be manually controlled by an operator or automatically controlled by a computer or controller. The extra gears are useful in matching the output torque of the engine and the transmission to the load on the automobile or vehicle powered by the transmission, and thereby improves fuel economy and transportation performance. The transmission may be installed as factory equipment, or may be added later, such as an after-market or dealer-installed option.

Abstract: A flicker reduction method for a lamp assembly includes providing current pulses to a fluorescent lamp in response to a periodic signal such as a ramp voltage. The current pulses illuminate the fluorescent lamp. The method further includes providing at least a predetermined number of current pulses to the fluorescent lamp per period of the periodic signal. A feedback circuit samples current in the fluorescent lamp to ensure that a predetermined number of current pulses have been provided. After the pulses are provided, the circuit is reset for the next cycle of the periodic signal.

Abstract: A suspension system for a vehicle having left and right wheels is disclosed and claimed. The system includes first and second suspension struts and first and second hydraulic cavities to supply first and second suspending spring force for the left and right wheels, respectively. The system also includes a volume modulator to selectively push fluid into and vent fluid from the first and second hydraulic cavities, thereby actively modulating the first and second suspending spring forces. The volume modulator includes first and second modulator pistons and first and second cavity-side valves. In a preferred embodiment, the modulator pistons are cycled and the cavity-side valves are opened and closed to counteract roll of the vehicle. Further, in a preferred embodiment, the first modulator piston and the second modulator piston are located approximately 180null apart relative to an eccentric to minimize power consumption of the volume modulator during roll of the vehicle.

Abstract: An air conditioning system includes an engine driven compressor, and an independent electric motor driven compressor in a common housing. A controller adjusts the independent operation of the engine driven compressor and electric motor driven compressor in response to cooling demand input, and operational parameters of the engine and the battery, as well as optionally the electric motor driven compressor output and engine driven compressor output. A method of independently operating an engine driven compressor and electric motor driven compressor is also provided. The air-conditioning system, controller, and method are particularly useful in hybrid vehicles that use smaller displacement internal combustion engines and electric motor drive means.
