    摘要: A gimbaled compliant guide for tape drives includes two plates mounted adjacent opposite edges of an arcuate tape bearing surface. The plates are pivotably mounted to accommodate variances in the tape path resulting from tape path tolerances and tape distortions. One plate is also mounted to a leaf spring to accommodate variations in tape width. The combination of simple compliancy and the ability to pivot eliminates the concentration of the stress at a single contact point between the tape edge and the guiding mechanism. By evenly distributing the stress along the span of contact between the edge of the tape and the guides, particulate matter generated from such contact is minimized. Such guiding mechanism may be used on any element of the tape path.

    摘要: A scanning force microscope having a sensor head and a base wherein a moveable sample holder is housed in the base and is positioned relative to a probe housed in the sensor head, such sample being monitored by an optical deflection detection system. The detection system is configured to provide direct visual observation of the probe with respect to the sample. The mirror of the detection system is mounted in a cut away portion of a sphere and defines the axis of rotation of a kinematic mount, such providing ease of fine adjustment of the detection system. The sensor head is in communication with the base by a stage kinematic mount, such providing ease of position adjustment of the sensor head with respect to the base.

    摘要: A cantilever stylus with an integrally formed conical tip is provided for atomic force microscopy AFM. The method for forming a stylus includes forming a circular masking pattern on the surface of a silicon substrate and anisotropically etching the silicon to form a post under the masking pattern. The post is then isotropically etched to produce a conical silicon tip mold. In one embodiment of the invention the silicon substrate and the conical silicon tip mold are thermally oxidized to form a cantilever stylus having including a cantilever arm with a conical tip fixed to its free end. In another embodiment of the invention the silicon substrate and the conical silicon tip mold are coated with a thin film of a dielectric material to form a cantilever stylus with a conical tip. In this embodiment the backside of the stylus is coated with a conductive material and a strong electric field is applied to the tip to cause electromigration of the conductive material to the point of the tip.

    摘要: The invention is a patterned-media disks for multi-track recording that are fabricated by nanoimprinting from a master template and that have data islands arranged in a pattern to compensate for head skew. The islands are arranged along lines canted relative to a disk radial line by an acute angle, as required for multi-track recording. However, this angle is not the same for all bands, but varies from band to band to compensate for head skew. The angle the lines in a band are canted is reduced by the amount of head skew. There are a plurality of bands between the disk inside-diameter (ID) and mid-diameter (MD) where the angle is in one direction from a radial line and a plurality of bands between the disk MD and outside-diameter (OD) where the angle is in the opposite direction from a radial line.

    摘要: A magnetic data recording system wherein the wherein adjacent track interference during writing is avoided by modulating the size of a write bubble on the magnetic media in response to a position error signal. If the position error signal indicates that the magnetic head is off-track, circuitry within the magnetic data recording system adjusts the size of the write bubble temporarily to prevent the write bubble from encroaching on a neighboring data track. This adjustment of the write bubble can be accomplished by adjusting power to the write head. Adjustment of the write bubble can also be achieved by adjusting power to a magnetic oscillator in a microwave assisted magnetic recording system (MAMR) or adjusting power to a heating element in a thermally assisted magnetic recording system.

    摘要: A magnetic recording system configured for recording to a bit patterned media using both hypertrack recording and shingled recording. The magnetic recording system includes a write pole with a notched trailing edge that results in a write bubble with a trailing edge that has two outer convex lobes separated by a centrally disposed concave region. By locating one of the lobes over first and second data tracks of a hypertrack, a proper alignment of the relative phase of the two tracks can be maintained. Further adjustment to the alignment can be achieved by adjusting the radial location of the write head.
