Abstract:
A turbine engine system comprising a turbine engine component, such as a fan includes a fan casing and a fan blade rotatable within the fan casing. An abradable seal coupled to the fan casing proximate the fan blade. The abradable seal comprising an abradable composite layer including a MAX phase solid and a polymer based abradable composition.
Abstract:
A novel method of depositing grit particles onto a fan blade tip coating is provided. The method enhances grit capture by presenting a softened coating surface for the impinging particles. The softened surface is achieved without high substrate temperatures that could degrade the base metal properties in the fan blade. An auxiliary heat source is used to establish a locally heated and softened surface where the grit deposition takes place. The softened surface greatly increases the probability of grit capture.
Abstract:
A blade comprises an airfoil having a root end and a tip. A metallic substrate is along at least a portion of the airfoil. An abrasive tip coating comprises an abrasive and an aluminum-based matrix. An aluminum-based base layer is between the tip coating and the substrate.
Abstract:
A thermally resistant article includes a structural body that is formed of a heat-sensitive core and a thermal protection layer on the exterior of the heat-sensitive core to provide thermal shielding. The thermal protection layer has a thickness and a composition such that the structural body meets a target strength-thermal performance criteria upon transient exposure to a heat source. Without the thermal protection layer, the heat-sensitive core does not meet the target strength-thermal performance criteria. The composition includes a polymeric material mixed with microspheres.
Abstract:
What is described is a wear resistant seal system that is adapted for resisting wear of a rotating part in a gas turbine engine as it rotates against a stationary part in the engine. The system includes an axially rotable member including an abrasive tip having a first tensile strength. The system also includes a stationary structure radially exterior and adjacent to the rotable member and including an abradable material. The abradable material includes a matrix material having a second tensile strength that, at least in a first temperature range, is lower than the first tensile strength and a filler material interspersed with the matrix material.
Abstract:
A gas turbine engine component according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a body having a first outer face meeting a second outer face at an intersection, the body having a plurality of apertures extending from an opening in the first outer face to an opening on the second outer face; and a coating filling at least a portion of the plurality of apertures.
Abstract:
A mask for masking a component at an annular boundary comprises a wall (90, 92) having an inner first rim portion having a first inner diameter (D1) and an outward rebate (140) adjacent the first rim portion.
Abstract:
A seal comprises a housing. A coating has at least two layers with a bond layer to be positioned between a housing and a second hard layer. The second hard layer is formed to be harder than the bond layer. The bond layer has a bond strength greater than or equal to 200 psi and less than or equal to 2000 psi. A gas turbine engine, and a method of forming a coating layer are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A process for manufacturing a preformed sheet having geometric surface features for a geometrically segmented abradable ceramic thermal barrier coating on a turbine engine component, the process comprising the steps of providing a preformed sheet material. The process includes forming a partially of geometric surface features in the sheet material. The process includes joining the sheet material to a substrate of the turbine engine component. The process includes disposing a thermally insulating topcoat over the geometric surface features and forming segmented portions that are separated by faults extending through the thermally insulating topcoat from the geometric surface features.
Abstract:
A seal for a gas turbine engine including an interlayer between a substrate and an abradable layer, the interlayer containing abrasive particles of which at least some abrasive particles protrude out of an interface that abuts the abradable layer.
