Abstract: A method of making insulated pipe joints in the field. The method includes the steps of providing a rigid shroud which is larger than the fitting from fitting end to fitting end, welding a first pipe length to a first end of the fitting, moving the shroud over the fitting to project the second end of the fitting beyond the second end of the shroud, welding the second pipe length to the second end of the fitting, centering the shroud on the fitting, enclosing the gaps between the fitting shroud and the shrouds of the pipe lengths by mold members, pouring a foamable insulation into the space between the fitting and fitting shroud and into the gaps, setting the insulation, removing the molds to expose the gap areas, and thereafter applying a protective coating to the gaps which coating overlaps the fitting shroud and the pipe length shrouds.

Abstract: A method of making a heat exchanger of the type used in vehicle radiators and having a core of spaced welded, as contrasted to lock-seam, tubes and interconnecting fins connected to spaced liquid tanks. The method, which permits machine-operated mass production of these exchangers, comprises stacking solder-coated core tubes in vertically spaced sets of a plurality of essentially horizontal tubes with serpentine fins located between each vertical pair of tube sets, arranging a top and a bottom rigid support plate against each of the topmost and bottommost tube sets, applying compression to the resulting stack through the support plates, banding the stack into an easily handled rigid assembly, applying a header plate to each essentially vertical side of the assembly with the tube ends extending through corresponding holes in the header plates, gang welding the projecting ends of the tubes to the exterior of the respective header plates by means of a movable multi-head automatic welder, dipping this core assembly into a liquid soldering flux dip, blowing heated air at a temperature above the melting point of the solder over the outer surfaces of the core assembly to bond the fins to the tubes, applying a solder sealant coating over the adjacent junction areas of tubes and header plates that are opposite to the welds, the welds thereby being on the liquid side and the solder on the air side and finally removing the support plates and bands from the core and attaching the enclosing tanks to the header plates in fluid tight relation.

Abstract: Apparatus for rapid and automatic welding of joints which interconnect sections of pipe, and in particular oil or gas transmission pipe. The system includes at least one torch transport assembly which simultaneously moves a plural number of welding torches along a path parallel to the pipe joint being welded. The torch transport assembly includes track segments which surround circumferential portions of the pipe joint, with a welding torch carrier and multiple torches being independently movable along each track segment. The torch transport assembly is mounted on a support apparatus which is rigidly clamped to the pipe sections during welding, and which permits the torch transport assembly to be rapidly positioned in rough alignment with a pipe joint. The torch transport assembly and selected operating parameters of each welding torch are adjusted to accurately position each torch with respect to the pipe joint, and to repeatably provide programmed welding parameters resulting in a uniform pipe joint weld. The present system is disclosed in the context of hot-wire gas-tungsten arc welding torches, and in the operating environment of out-of-position joint welding.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing and using a precision insert in a brazing process. An insert, manufactured to conform to the curvature of the metal members to be joined, is placed between the abutting metal members. Retaining wires are then welded to the insert and to the metal members, thereby, holding the insert in place. The braze metal is applied so that when heated the braze metal is drawn by capillary action into the space between the insert and metal members. Cooling of the assembly then results in a uniform bond.

Abstract: A device for the continuous longitudinal seam welding of tubes particularly by electron beam welding, includes a pair of opposed rollers arranged with their mating groove portions in opposition on a bracket which may be rotated so as to shift the rollers in transverse directions. The arrangement includes means for scanning the strip edges of a sheet material which is fed and formed into the form of a slotted tube and adjusting the edges so that the tube is fed between the rollers with the longitudinal groove or slot centered therebetween. The scanning elements are arranged along the strip edges to be welded and actuate a control for a motor which is employed for shifting the grooved rollers with the tube in order to control the position of the weld seam for the purpose of centering the seam in respect to the electron beam. In a preferred arrangement the workpiece is guided by pressure rolls arranged on respective opposite sides of the workpiece which are advantageously carried on a rocker arm so that they may be jointly pivoted about the axis of the workpiece. A second pressure roll pair for guiding the workpiece is advantageously arranged on the rocker arm at a location between the contactless scanning device and the welding pressure roll pair. The second pressure roll pair forces the two band edges of the sheet to be formed firmly together and firmly grips the workpiece running therebetween in the same manner as the welding pressure roll pair.
