Abstract: A sealing electrode for discharge lamp having electrically conductive cup, and an emitter pellet is disclosed. The cup seals a passage into the discharge lamp, and additionally supports the electrode pellet or tip for the discharge. The design enables the emitter, electrode and seal structure to be made separately off line, while also enabling the emitter to be protected from contaminants during subsequent assembly.

Abstract: A discharge device for operation in a gas at a prescribed pressure includes a cathode having a plurality of micro hollows therein, and an anode spaced from the cathode. Each of the micro hollows has dimensions selected to produce a micro hollow discharge at the prescribed pressure. Preferably, each of the micro hollows has a cross-sectional dimension that is on the order of the mean free path of electrons in the gas. Electrical energy is coupled to the cathode and the anode at a voltage and current for producing micro hollow discharges in each of the micro hollows in the cathode. The discharge device may include a discharge chamber for maintaining the prescribed pressure. A dielectric layer may be disposed on the cathode when the spacing between the cathode and the anode is greater than about the mean free path of electrons in the gas. Applications of the discharge device include fluorescent lamps, excimer lamps, flat fluorescent light sources, miniature gas lasers, electron sources and ion sources.

Abstract: The cathode for a gas discharged lamp includes gettering materials which are placed within the interior of the cathode shell. Other components may also be placed inside the cathode for continuous activation. For example, in mercury vapor lamps, a mercury amalgam is placed within the cathode. In another embodiment, a mass of electron emission assisting compound is placed within the cathode to replenish the emission assisting compound which deteriorates from the cathode.

Abstract: A vacuum ultraviolet light source for generating a pulse discharge in a low pressure gas and extracting ultraviolet light from a plasma created in that discharge, is disclosed which comprises a discharge space P, a plate-like anode located in the discharge space, a plurality of hollow cathodes located in the discharge space in an opposed, spaced-apart relation to the anode, auxiliary electrodes provided in an inside space of the hollow cathode in a state shielded from the hollow cathode, means which, while maintaining a pressure in the discharge space constant, flows a gas along a route in the discharge space after passing through an inner space in each hollow cathode, a power supply for supplying an electric power for generating a main discharge across the hollow cathode and the anode after a pre-discharge is produced across each hollow cathode and the anode, and ultraviolet extracting means for extracting ultraviolet light radiated from a plasma which is produced by a discharge in the discharge space.

Abstract: A hollow cathode electrode, particularly useful in fluorescent lamps, comprises an outer metal sleeve, an inner metal sleeve disposed within the outer sleeve and an emissive mix disposed on the inner sleeve. In one embodiment, the inner sleeve is a folded cylinder having a square cross section disposed within a circular cylinder. The object of the present invention is to prevent heat loss from the inner sleeve and to minimize sputtering. The electrode of the present invention may also include a third exterior sleeve surrounding but not contacting the interior sleeve or sleeves.
