A getter material selected among titanium, zirconium, tantalum, niobium, vanadium and mixtures thereof, and alloys of these metals with nickel, iron or aluminum can be included in the device. The mercury dispenser, promoter and optional getter material are provided preferably in the form of powders compressed as a pellet, or contained in a ring-shaped metallic support or rolled on the surfaces of a metallic strip. Also disclosed is a process for introducing mercury into electron tubes by making use of the above-mentioned mercury-dispensing devices.

A Field Emitter Device (FED) having a substantially reducing atmosphere is described. The atmosphere in a FED can be maintained substantially free of oxidizing gases and includes a partial pressure of hydrogen between about 1.times.10.sup.-7 millibar (mbar) and 1.times.10.sup.-3 mbar. In one embodiment, a non-evaporable getter material previously charged with hydrogen gas is placed inside the FED before the FED is sealed. The non-evaporable getter material can be charged by exposure to hydrogen gas at a pressure between about 1.times.10.sup.-4 and about 2 bar. Subsequently, the components forming the FED are sealed, and the FED is evacuated and hermetically sealed to the outside atmosphere.

A Zr-C sintered body is charged with H.sub.2 to form zirconium hydride within the body and such body is positioned in working association with a heating means within an electronic tube, such as a vidicon tube, which utilizes hydrogen as a supporting gas. During an operation of such tube, the sintered body is heated and releases an amount of H.sub.2 therefrom as a function of the temperature while the sintered body acts as a getter for any residual gases within the tube, other than H.sub.2, at elevated operating temperatures.

This invention provides a poloidal divertor for stacking counterstreaming ion beams to provide high intensity colliding beams. To this end, method and apparatus are provided that inject high energy, high velocity, ordered, atomic deuterium and tritium beams into a lower energy, toroidal, thermal equilibrium, neutral, target plasma column that is magnetically confined along an endless magnetic axis in a strong restoring force magnetic field having helical field lines to produce counterstreaming deuteron and triton beams that are received bent, stacked and transported along the endless axis, while a poloidal divertor removes thermal ions and electrons all along the axis to increase the density of the counterstreaming ion beams and the reaction products resulting therefrom. By balancing the stacking and removal, colliding, strong focused particle beams, reaction products and reactions are produced that convert one form of energy into another form of energy.

An apparatus allows photons in the infrared, visible, ultraviolet, soft x-ray and hard x-ray energy ranges to pass freely along a line of sight path between two vacuum regions at different pressures, yet maintains the pressure difference between the two regions and, in particular, removes vapor species attempting to pass between the two regions along the line of sight path. The apparatus works by causing the line of sight path to pass through a volume provided with a pumping mechanism which is transparent to the photons. Within this volume the vapor species are ionized and deviated from the line of sight by both magnetic and electric fields. The ionization mechanism is provided by an electron plasma created by the Penning discharge mechanism in an equipotential volume between two sets of electrodes. Vapor species attempting to pass through the electron plasma are ionized by collisions with the electrons in the plasma and removed from the line of sight path by the magnetic and electric fields used to maintain the Penning discharge.

There is provided a metallic tape supporting a mercury vapor releasing material, preferably Ti.sub.3 Hg, admixed with a non-evaporable getter metal, preferably an alloy of 84% Zr--15% Al, contained within a continuous series of depressions within the tape. The depressions form a successive series of pairs of depressions preferably each having an oval shape. Each pair of oval shaped depressions is separated by a distance greater than the distance separating the individual oval shapes. The tape can then be cut between each pair of depressions to form a small strip containing two depressions. Such a small strip can then be folded through an angle of approximately 180.degree. about an axis, in the plane of the tape midway between the depressions, perpendicular to the tape length. This folded strip can then be welded to a support and used as a cold cathode electrode in a miniature fluorescent lamp. The cathode can be heated during a manufacturing process to release mercury and subsequently act as a cold cathode and getter device.
