Abstract:
An internet radio for portable applications and uses such as in an automobile enables remotely configuring a wireless communication device comprising the steps of remotely configuring a format for providing content on said wireless communication device for a first user; remotely configuring a second format for providing content on said wireless communication device for a second user; receiving configuration data representing said format for said first user and said format for said second user from a remote network; and providing selected content from content downloaded from said network. Customized information is also communicated to the radio such as stock quotes, travel information, advertising, and e-mail. Onboard global positioning allows for channel updating by location, traffic information, geographic advertising and available similar content.
Abstract:
To purchase a thing which the viewer thinks that he or she wants to buy while a program is on the air, it is necessary to take procedures, (1) searching for information and (2) placing an order (at a store), which requires trouble and time. With respect to, of the things used in a program, things which are objects of sale, data as recognition words and a merchandise tag are transmitted so that the recognition words or the merchandise can be narrowed down. The user specifies by voice a thing which he or she wants to purchase while watching a program. After watching the program, the user determines whether to purchase the merchandise specified while watching the program or not by perusing the merchandise and related information. The seller is notified of the registration of purchase through the broadcasting station, and it is facilitated to sell and purchase clothes, furniture or the like used in programs being broadcast.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a data processing system for receiving at least one of a user data file and an application program wirelessly transmitted from a central server. The data processing system comprises an RF transceiver for receiving in a forward channel blocks of data transmitted by the central server and transmitting to the central server in a reverse channel at least one of user input data and user commands. The blocks of data comprise the user data file and the application program. The data processing system further comprises a download controller for monitoring the received blocks of data and detecting therein corrupted data associated with a first block of data. The download controller, in response to the detection of the corrupted data, transmits to the central server via a wireline network a retransmission request capable of causing the central server to retransmit the first block of data.
Abstract:
A system is disclosed for providing direct automated access to an online information services provider through an address embedded in a video or audio program, commercial message, or news story. The system operates with video or audio programs which are received through broadcast, cable or pre-recorded media, and which are encoded in either analog or digital formats. The address of an online information provider is encoded in a vertical blanking interval or other non-displayed portion of an electronic signal which represents the video or audio program so as not to interfere with the program as displayed or transduced on a television or audio sound system. The online information provider address is detected and decoded from the electronic signal and used in establishing a direct digital communication link to the online information provider. Upon detecting an online provider address, the system indicates to the user that more information is available. The user may then elect to establish a connection with the online information provider by giving a simple command, e.g., pushing a special button on a remote control. The system then automatically establishes a direct digital communication link to the online information provider through the address and provides for interactive information exchange and processing to permit signals received from the online information provider to be displayed on a conventional television, transduced on a sound system, or also on a high resolution reproducing system such as a computer monitor, or other reproduction device.
Abstract:
An information distribution and processing system contains a remote site, a sender and a receiving apparatus. The remote site contains a first set of digital data. The sender delivers a second set of digital data to the receiving device, In one embodiment of the present invention, the receiving device contain a timing device for automatically receiving the second set of digital data at predetermined times. The second set of digital data contains a first set of displayable data, a second set of displayable data, at least one non-displayable symbol, and at least one linking reference associated with the second set of displayable data. If desired, a user can select the second set of displayable data. The associated linking reference is sent to the remote site. The associated linking reference is used by the remote site to search for the additional information, and returns the requested information to the user.
Abstract:
An information distribution and processing system has a broadcast channel for delivering a first set of digital data and a bi-directional channel for allowing a user to obtain additional information. The additional information is stored in a database. In one embodiment of the present invention, the broadcast channel uses a satellite to broadcast the data. In another embodiment of the invention, the bi-directional channel is a telephone system. At predetermined locations of the first set of digital data, linking references are embedded. If desired, the user can select a linking reference and send a request to the database via the bi-directional channel. The database uses the selected linking reference to search for information, and returns the requested information to the user.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an improved method and apparatus to collect and provide viewer feedback to broadcasts. According to one aspect of the present invention, a rating is generated for a broadcast by a server system. The rating is based at least in part on viewer feedback to the broadcast, and the rating indicates a likelihood of interest in the broadcast for potential subsequent viewers. Access to the rating is then provided so that predications can be made as to whether or not the broadcast will be of interest to potential subsequent viewers. According to another aspect of the present invention, the rating is provided from the server system to an entertainment system, and the broadcast can be selected for viewing at an entertainment system based on the rating generated by the server system. In one embodiment, the viewer feedback is received at the entertainment system in response to a feedback questionnaire.
Abstract:
An information distribution and processing system contains a central site, a transmitter and a receiving device. The central site contains a first set of digital data. The transmitter delivers a second set of digital data to the receiving device. In one embodiment of the present invention, the receiving device contain a timing device for automatically receiving the second set of digital data at predetermined times. In another embodiment, the transmitter transmits an alert signal indicating a transmission of the second set of digital data. The second set of digital data contains a first set of displayable data, a second set of displayable data, at least one non-displayable symbol, and at least one linking reference associated with the second set of displayable data. If desired, a user can select the second set of displayable data. The associated linking reference is sent to the central site. The associated linking reference is used by the central site to search for the additional information, and returns the requested information to the user.
Abstract:
A method and system are disclosed for use with a mobile radio network, which receives and analyzes packets from a packet-switched fixed network, such as the Internet, and depending on the type of information received (e.g., speech, low speed data, or high speed WWW data), routes the information over an appropriate radio air interface to a mobile radio terminal. The speech information can be routed to mobile radio terminals over a conventional circuit-switched mobile radio link (e.g., a GSM traffic channel), the low speed data can be routed over a packet-switched mobile radio link (e.g., a GPRS traffic data channel), and the high speed data can be routed over a wideband broadcast radio link (e.g., a DAB network radio link). As a result, mobile radio terminals can advantageously enjoy full access to the Internet and thereby communicate effectively over the Internet with other mobile and wire-bound terminals.
Abstract:
A system for conveying information from a plurality of subscribers to a central station includes a communications link between each subscriber and the central station. At each subscriber there are means for transmitting coded information and means for controlling the time of transmission so that each subscriber repetitively provides information to the central station. The central station includes storage means for comparing successive signals from each subscriber and means for comparing the stored signals to verify their authenticity.
