The binder is cured by irradiation with shortwave light and subsequent heating. The process is distinguished by low curing temperatures and brief curing times.

A tool insert comprising a composite diamond abrasive compact and a method of its production are provided. The composite abrasive compact is characterized by an intermediate layer between the diamond compact and the cemented carbide support. The intermediate layer consists essentially of discrete cubic boron nitride particles constituting 60 to 40 percent by volume of the intermediate layer, carbide particles, preferably tungsten carbide particles and diamond solvent, preferably cobalt. The carbide particles and diamond solvent together constitute 40 to 60 percent by volume of the intermediate layer and the diamond solvent constitutes 15 to 25 percent by volume of the carbide/solvent combination.

A multilayer abrading tool is produced by first providing a tool substrate with an irregular abrading surface. The irregular surface is covered with metal balls which are brazed thereto to form a structured surface. An abrasive grit coating is provided by mixing a temporary binder, an abrasive grit material and an infiltrant powder material. This coating is then applied to the structured surface. The tool is then heated to drive off the binder and to cause infiltration of the infiltrant in the abrasive grit to form a multilayer of diamond grit suspended to a braze matrix which is attached to the structured surface of the tool substrate.

An improved polishing pad material is produced by modifying conventional poromeric materials in which a porous thermoplastic resin matrix, typically polyurethane, is reinforced with a fibrous network such as a felted mat of polyester fibers. The polishing material is modified by coalescing the resin among the fibers, preferably by heat treatment, to increase the porosity and hardness of the material as well increasing the surface activity of the resin. The polishing material may also incorporate polishing aids such as particulate abrasives and may also be used as a lapping or grinding material.

Optionally, other dispersoids may also be incorporated. The preferred composite article or cutting tool has a fracture toughness equal to or greater than about 2.5 MN/m.sup.3/2. Methods of preparation and use are also presented.

Disclosed is a process for making emery boards comprising the steps of providing a substrate selected from the group consisting of wood, cardboard and plastic sheets having first and second surfaces; adhesively applying abrasive paper on at least one surface of said substrate; forming on said abrasive surface a uniform film comprising a lubricant and a humectant selected from the groups consisting of lubricant and humectant polyethylene glycols by applying a film of a solution comprising said lubricant and humectant on said surface and drying said surface, said film being sufficiently thin so as not to impart a greasy feeling to the touch on said emery board nor interfere with the abrasive action of said board; and cutting out emery boards from said surface in the desired shape.
