Abstract: The present invention is directed to a coating composition or paint comprising a multistage latex with at least first and second stages, wherein the composition or paint is substantially free of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and capable of film formation even in the absence of coalescent agents. The base paint formulation is capable of being tinted at a point-of-sale (i.e. in-store) using a colorant composition of a type and quantity required to produce a paint of desired color and finish. The paints, including deeply colored paints, show improved block resistance, scrub resistance and tack resistance.

Abstract: The present invention provides novel packaging articles, e.g., food and beverage cans, having a novel coating composition applied to at least a portion of a surface thereon. In preferred embodiments, the coating composition includes at least a film-forming amount of a copolyester resin having a backbone that includes one or more soft segments and a plurality of hard segments. The copolyester resin preferably has a glass transition temperature from about from about 10° C. to about 50° C. The present invention also provides a method for making coated articles.

Abstract: A thermoplastic polymer advanceable by solid state polymerization is blended with at least one dissimilar thermoplastic polymer, or an organic or inorganic particulate filler. The blend is solid state polymerized to provide a modified polymer alloy or filled polymer blend having at least one physical or chemical property different from that of the blend before solid state polymerization. A substrate is coated with an adherent layer of the modified polymer alloy or filled polymer blend. The modified polymer alloy or filled polymer blend may also be coextruded with a layer of thermoplastic extrusion polymer having a melt viscosity similar to that of the modified polymer alloy or filled polymer blend and applied to a substrate to form an adherent coating.

Abstract: This invention relates to a novel stack of siding, comprising: first and second coated siding pieces comprising an outer topcoat layer, an inner decorative coating layer and a fiberboard cement substrate layer; and a liner positioned between the first and second coated siding pieces. The siding, during normal transportation and installation, retains an acceptable appearance that is substantially free of viewable scratches or mars. In more preferred embodiments, the outer topcoat layer of the siding has a thickness of at least 8 microns and comprises a polyurethane dispersion. The present invention also provides novel methods of pre-finishing a fiberboard cement siding product, comprising the steps of: providing a fiberboard cement substrate layer; coating a first major surface of the fiberboard cement substrate with a decorative coating; coating the exposed surface of the decorative coating with a topcoat layer; and curing the topcoat layer to provide an abrasion resistant siding. More preferably, the curing step comprises a process that does not require heating the siding to a board surface temperature in excess of 100null C.
