摘要: A device for providing positive expiratory pressure therapy to a patient wherein exhaled air is at a comparatively higher pressure than atmospheric pressure, said device including a container to hold liquid, an air inlet means to allow entry of air into the container and an air outlet to allow air to vent from the container. The air inlet means includes a conduit to discharge the exhaled air. The conduit is fixed in position so that the exhaled air is discharged at or substantially adjacent the base of the container. In use liquid is introduced into the container to a predetermined level and the bottom of the conduit is below the predetermined level of liquid to provide a desired level of positive pressure and the air outlet is above the predetermined level of liquid.

摘要: A method and system according to preferred embodiments of the present invention allows optimizing the dispensing of aerosol medicaments. In particular the system according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention allows the administration of an exogenous pulmonary surfactant to very young patients (e.g. preterm neonates). A catheter 101 conveys atomized surfactant directly to the retro-pharyngeal region in order to increase efficiency of the medicament administration without being invasive: this is particularly important for very young patients, such as pre-term born neonates suffering from neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (nRDS). According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention the catheter is made of biocompatible flexible material (e.g. plastic material). It is possible to couple the catheter with a rigid scaffolding (e.g. metallic) to increase stiffness of the device and to improve easiness of positioning operations. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the delivery of the atomized medicament is done by means of an air blasting technique.

摘要: A leveling device for determining the zero pressure point of an external draining system with respect to a patient is provided. The leveling device generally includes a body having a viewing element defining a field of vision, and a reference point indicator spaced apart from the viewing element and disposed within the line of vision. The viewing element and the reference point indicator define a line of sight. The device further includes a horizontal level indicator mated to the body and oriented parallel to the line of sight established by the viewing element and the reference point indicator. The horizontal level indicator is effective to indicate the horizontal alignment of the body with respect to a particular reference point viewed through the viewing element and indicated by the reference point indicator. The device can optionally include a reflector element disposed adjacent the horizontal level indicator and within the field of vision, such that the horizontal level indicator is visible through the viewing element via the reflector element.

摘要: An integrated respiratory ventilation system and method for its calibration is described. The system includes a ventilator having air conduits, transducers adapted to emit signals proportional to the level of air pressure or air flow within the air conduits, and inspiration, expiration and exhaust ports. A processor-controlled calibrator is in communication with one or more of the air conduits. A preferred calibrator includes a water-filled outer column and a vertically aligned inner column extending into the outer column, the inner column having an upper end in communication with at least one of the ports. A processor controls the opening and closing of the ports and the level of air pressure in, and air flow from, the inner column to measure the level of transducer signals at two known pressures and two known flows. The processor uses the measured transducer signals to calibrate the transducer.
