摘要:
Radiation delivery devices useful in brachytherapy which employ radioactive palladium-103 as the radiation source material are disclosed. Certain embodiments of the disclosed radiation delivery devices have the advantages that they can be fabricated with the desired specific activity, that the self-shielding effects of the devices are minimized, that the radioactive source material is bonded to a substrate in a manner which substantially prevents it from becoming detached, and that a variety of customizable radiation delivery devices can be made using the concepts of the invention. Also disclosed are processes for bonding radiation source material to various substrates using electroless plating, chemical vapor deposition and polymer matrices. These processes have the advantage that they can be applied to bond the radiation source material to a wide variety of substrates including different substrate materials and differently shaped substrates, thereby providing the ability to tailor the radiation delivery devices to the specific requirements of a particular brachytherapy treatment.
摘要:
A delivery system and method for interstitial radiation therapy comprising substantially axially stiff and radially flexible elongated members made of material which is bioabsorbable in living tissue and a plurality of radioactive seeds dispersed in a predetermined array within the elongate member. The radioactive seeds can be dispersed within assembled half-shells made of the same material. The housing for the radiation seeds can also be manufactured from extruded material. A system for manufacturing the interstitial radiation therapy seed strands that automatically makes the seed strands is also provided. The delivery system and method further customize the member based on a prescription.
摘要:
Radioactive sources, preferably radioactive seeds, for use in brachytherapy comprising a radioisotope within a sealed biocompatible container, wherein at least one part of a surface of the container is roughened, shaped or otherwise treated so that it is no longer smooth. The surface treatment may enhance the ultrasound visibility of the source and/or reduce the tendency of the source to migrate once implanted in a patient's body. Preferred radioisotopes are palladium-103 and iodine-125.

摘要:
A brachytherapy apparatus is composed of a tubular needle with forwardly protruding cutting edges at its tip, a holder supporting the needle and a driver for electromechanically causing the needle to undergo a continuous or oscillatory rotary motion around its axis and/or a reciprocating linear motion in the longitudinal direction such that its front opening at its tip can reliably reach a specified position inside a patient's tissue without being deflected or bowing when it encounters an obstruction such as a calcification or a small bone. Such motions may be provided by a piezoelectric hammer and a piezoelectric tamper. After the needle is thus correctly positioned, a brachytherapy device such as a radioactive seed or a reflector may be pushed through and out of the needle by means of a pusher as the needle is retracted to leave a track inside the tissue. A quickly hardening liquid may be thereafter injected through the needle to immobilize the deposited brachytherapy device. Another brachytherapy device may be deposited similarly after the needle is retracted by a specified distance. A plurality of brachytherapy devices may be preliminarily prepared as a unit having them linearly arranged inside a hardened liquid and mutually separated by specified distances such that they can be pushed together through the needle, or they may be injected together with a quickly hardening liquid.
摘要:
A system for brachytherapy is provided. The system includes an implantation device having a tubular member, a radioactive source within the member, and a socket at opposing ends of the tubular member. A plurality of implantation devices may be joined into an assembly by use of a spacer positioned within the sockets of adjoining devices. The device may be deployed at an implantation site by use of a delivery mechanism, such as needle. The presence of the tubular members and spacers minimizes movement of the radioactive source subsequent to deployment, so as not to alter dose distribution for subsequent irradiation.

A radiotherapy system, and preferably a brachytherapy system, for delivering radiation to tissue surrounding an interstitial space is provided. While the system can be used for a variety of purposes, the system is preferably used to treat spinal metastases. In general, the system includes a catheter member having a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner lumen extending therethrough, and a structural support adapted to fit within an interstitial space in load bearing portion of a patient's body and having an internal space for removably receiving the distal end of the catheter member. At least one anchoring element can be disposed proximate to the distal end of the catheter. The anchoring element is preferably adapted to fit within the internal space in the structural support so as to anchor the distal end of the catheter therein. The system further includes a radiation source disposable within the internal space of the structural support through the lumen in the catheter for delivering radiation to tissue surrounding the interstitial space.

A spacing apparatus for use with radiation therapy devices, and in particular, for use with a brachytherapy device. The spacing apparatus is useful in that the instrument is effective to limit the amount of radiation that comes into contact with the sensitive tissue proximate to the extraction site, and thereby protect sensitive tissue from overheating or hotspots, and/or protect against radiation exposure outside of the patient's body which may affect healthcare providers or others who might come close to the patient. In particular, the spacing apparatus is effective to control the proximity of a brachytherapy device to the outer surface of the sensitive tissue proximate to a surgical extraction site.

A stopple for retaining material within a hollow needle/push rod assembly is made of a synthetic absorbable material and is configured to fit snugly within the hollow needle of the needle/push rod assembly. The stopple is typically circular in shape, having a diameter that is substantially similar to the inner diameter of the hollow needle. The stopple prevents inadvertent ejection of material stored in the hollow needle/push rod assembly.
摘要:
The present invention provides a method of determining the dose rate of a radiation source comprising locating three or more detectors in the vicinity of said source, each for providing an output indicative of the amount of radiation received from said source; and determining the location of said source from at least some of said detector outputs, wherein as many of said detector outputs is required to provide an acceptably accurate result are used in determining said location; whereby the dose of radiation from said source can be determined from said determined location of said source and either a known activity of said source or a measure of the activity of said source determined by means of said detectors.
