摘要: Photographic glass plates are advantageously prepared by a process in which the functional layers are applied to the glass plate support by lamination. In a first form of this process, a multilayer-composite comprising antihalation, silver halide emulsion and protective overcoat layers is transferred from a flexible polymeric film support to the glass support. In carrying out this first form of the process, a release layer, protective overcoat layer, silver halide emulsion layer and antihalation layer are coated, in order, on a flexible polymeric film and laminated via an adhesive layer to a glass plate having suitable thickness and flatness for use as a photographic support. The release layer is designed to have greater adhesion to the flexible polymeric film than to the protective overcoat layer, whereby the film and release layer can be stripped off prior to the plate being put into use. In a second form of the process, an antihalation layer, silver halide emulsion layer and protective overcoat layer are coated, in order, on a support material comprised of a release sheet, a very thin polymeric film and an adhesive layer interposed between the release sheet and the film, the release sheet is then stripped away and the remainder of the coated support material is laminated via the adhesive layer to the glass plate support. The process of lamination eliminates the difficult task of directly coating photographic layers on glass plates and greatly facilitates the preparation of high quality photographic glass plates in a wide variety of different sizes.

摘要: A coater applies ultraviolet curable coating material to the opposite sides of roll film by a double-sided coater which employs offset coating rolls and smoothing bars. A splice detector responds to the occurrence of a splice upstream of the coater and causes the splice region to move through the coater without applying coating material to the splice region, by lifting the emulsion side of the film off of the coating roll as the splice passes and by temporarily and sequentially interrupting the operation of the smoothing bars and the offset applicator roller on the non-emulsion or base side, concurrently with the passage of the splice therepast. In a second embodiment, the film is lifted by lifting bars off of both coating rolls and tension on the film is concurrently decreased in the coater to prevent marking of the surface of the coated film by the final smoothing bars.

摘要: Radiation-curable compositions useful for restorative and/or protective treatment of photographic elements are comprised of a polymerizable epoxy compound, a cationic initiator for initiating polymerization of the epoxy compound, a polymerizable acrylic compound, a haloalkylated aromatic ketone which serves as a free-radical initiator for initiating polymerization of the acrylic compound, and a polymerizable organofunctional silane. Photographic elements, such as still films, motion picture films, paper prints, microfiche, and the like, are provided with a protective overcoat layer which is permanently bonded to the element, and serves to protect it from abrasion and scratches, by coating the element with the radiation-curable composition and irradiating the coating to bond it to the element and cure it to form a transparent, flexible, scratch-resistant, cross-linked polymeric layer. The protective overcoat layer can be applied to the image-bearing side of the element or to the support side of the element or to both sides. The radiation-curable composition can also be used as a restorative composition in the treatment of photographic elements which have scratches, abrasion marks, and the like, which impair the appearance or projection capabilities of the element. In use as a restorative composition, the radiation-curable composition can be applied locally in the region of the defects only, to effectively eliminate them and restore the element to a substantially defect-free condition, or it can be applied over the entire surface of the element to both eliminate the defects and form a protective overcoat layer that is capable of providing protection against subsequent scratching or abrasion.

摘要: Compositions to be applied to professional studio photographs on color paper or black and white emulsions for protective and finishing purposes comprising a vinyl resin in particulate form dispersed in methyl isobutyl ketone to which is added a blend of aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphtha and xylene, with or without a thinning or flattening agent, and a plasticizer. The compositions are also useful for preventing color changes and for making color corrections. They overcome the yellowing and other disadvantages of conventional lacquers such drying hard and cracking the photographic print.
