This invention provides an apparatus and process for automatically coating solid pharmaceutical dosage forms, e.g., tablets. The apparatus comprises a coating pan, having a rotating means, e.g., motor and a weighing means, e.g., scales in combination with the pan and motor. A process controller is in electronic communication with both the pan motor and scales, for controlling the pan rotation and monitoring the weight of the coating pan contents. There is also provided a plurality of material containing reservoirs having conduit means communicating with the interior of the pan. The material containing reservoirs may also have weighing means, e.g., scales in combination with the reservoirs, which are also in electronic communication with the process controller. These reservoirs may contain a water supply, a coating syrup supply, color suspension supply, and polishing ingredients for use in coating the tablets. The process controller is pre-programmed to dispense the various coating ingredients in a precise sequence, while monitoring the coating weight of the tablets, whereby the entire coating process is automatically effectuated in one continuous operation.

Thus, a tacky plastics film may be held in a frame and the object pushed through the film. Alternatively the object may be conveyed on a moving belt to a position adjacent to a heated plastics film and the film brought into contact with the object. The plastics film may for example be an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.

The invention provides a method for forming a protective silicon carbide (SiC) film on a silicon (Si) substrate. The method permits the formation of silicon carbide on the Si substrate on all surfaces simultaneously. The process is highlighted in that the silicon substrate to be coated is placed in a susceptor having tantalum carbide surfaces and which has a high purity ambient. The substrate is heated at a temperature about 1250.degree. C to remove native SiO.sub.2 from its surface. The system is then cooled to a temperature of about 900.degree. C and methane is added for about 30 minutes to thereby deposit a layer of carbon which is further reacted with the Si substrate at 1250.degree. C to form a smooth, pin hole free SiC film. SiC layers are also formed by a one step reaction in which methane is reacted directly with Si at 1250.degree. C.

A process is also provided for preparing a cast-in-place surfacing composition comprising (A) applying a primer to a surface to be coated, (B) applying a seal-forming coat to a primed surface, (C) allowing the seal-forming coat to stand for a time sufficient to allow entrained gases to escape from the seal-forming coat and the primed surface, and (D) applying to the surface of the sealforming coat a membrane-forming coat comprising (1) a mixture of a high molecular weight polyol and a low molecular weight chain stiffener, (2) a substantially inert nonvolatile extender, (3) a polyisocyanate, (4) a volatile solvent, and (5) a polyurethaneforming reaction catalyst.

A method for the in-situ boron doping of polycrystalline silicon is disclosed wherein the boron-to-silicon ratio is increased beyond the limit of solubility of boron in silicon. Using appropriate flow rates of SiH4, B2H6, and H2, and deposition temperature, boron rich silicon is deposited upon a substrate. The boron is in solution in the silicon to the limit of its solubility and is present in excess amounts in boron-rich phases believed to be boron silicides. The deposited boron-rich polycrystalline silicon is subjected to a thermal oxidation step during which the dissolved boron is depleted into the growing oxide while the boron-rich phases decompose allowing the freed boron to go into solution in the silicon to replace the boron which is lost to the thermal oxide. By proper selection of parameter values, based upon experimentally determined silicon resistivity-to-B2H6 flow rate-to-thermal oxidation relationships, the boron-rich phases are substantially eliminated from the polycrystalline silicon at the same time that the thermal oxidation step is completed thereby yielding minimum resistivity doped silicon in the final structure.
