摘要: An optical preform has a predetermined spherical curve on a concave surface of the optical preform, a predetermined spherical curve on a convex surface of the optical preform and a near add power. A thin resin is applied to the concave surface of the optical preform and molded to form a toric layer by a mold having a toric, convex mold surface. The resin layer is then cured and the mold removed to form a finished ophthalmic lens.

摘要: A method for making a finished aspheric single vision, spherical or aspheric bifocal, multifocal or progressive addition contact lens includes the step of fitting a patient requiring a near correction with a single vision spherical or aspheric contact lens for optimal distance vision and comfortable fit. If desired, the patient is then over-refracted to determine the required near correction to be embodied in the contact lens. A portion of the optic corresponding to the center location of the pupil is marked on the convex side of the optic to form an optical preform. In some instances, the lens may not stabilize on the cornea to a suitable degree. Thus, it is often desirable to stabilize the contact lens, either prior to placing the lens on the patient or after rotation is observed on the cornea of the patent. Observation of rotation on the patient's cornea is enhanced by means of the mark that is used to designate the center of the patient's pupil. The optical preform is removed from the eye of the patient and the concave side of the optical preform is marked at a position corresponding to the mark on the convex side that denotes the center of the pupil. The mark disposed on the convex side of the optical preform is removed. A specified volume of polymerizable resin is placed in a mold embodying the required correction, which includes an add power zone so that the resin fills the intervening space between the mold and the optical preform. The add power zone is aligned on the optical preform to a predetermined position with respect to the mark on the optical preform designating the center of the pupil. The resin is then polymerized the optical preform is demolded to obtain the finished contact lens having the required correction.

摘要: A photopolymerizable resin is formed from between about 50% to 90% by weight of a polymerizable base component, between about 1% and 20% by weight of a cross-linker, between about 0.5% and 6% by weight of a photoinitiator, and between about 0.5% and 20% by weight of a viscosity control agent. Preferably the resin has a viscosity above 25 and below 130 centistokes at 68.degree. F. In a preferred embodiment, the resin includes between about 0.5% and 3.0% by weight of fumed silica or fine mesh silica as a viscosity control agent, and is cured under the combined influence of heat and actinic radiation to form a clear, hard, plastic optic having a refractive index of greater than or equal to 1.50 and a scratch resistance greater than or equal to 1.0 in a Bayer abrader and hazemeter. A method and apparatus for forming improved ophthalmic lenses is also included.

摘要: A method of casting an ophthalmic optic is described. A mold, an optical preform and a polymerizable resin are provided. The resin is disposed between the mold and the optical preform. The preform and the resin interact to produce a contact angle between the resin and preform of from about 20 degrees to about 45 degrees; or the mold and the resin interact to produce a contact angle between the mold and the resin of from about 45 to about 75 degrees; or both. The polymerizable resin is then cured.Another method of casting an ophthalmic optic is also described. A mold, an optical preform and a polymerizable resin are provided. The optical preform is supplied with a surface having a regular pattern of grooves that comprise a grid formed by intersecting curves or lines imprinted on the surface of the optical preform. The polymerizable resin is provided between the optical preform and the mold such that the polymerizable resin contacts the regular pattern of grooves on the optical preform. The polymerizable resin is then cured.

摘要: A new polycarbonate copolymer resin is formed by internal generation of stabilizers bound to the polymer chain. Irradiation of a solid piece or a deoxygenated solution of the resin at a first frequency below 300 nm generates 2 to 8 mol percent of phenyl salicylate groups which are rearranged to dihydroxybenzophenone groups by irradiating the resin under oxygen excluding conditions at a second frequency from 300 to 320 nm.

摘要: A method and apparatus for measuring thermal diffusivity and molecular relaxation processes in a sample material utilizing two light beams, one being a pulsed laser light beam for forming a thermal lens in the sample material, and the other being a relatively low power probe light beam for measuring changes in the refractive index of the sample material during formation and dissipation of the thermal lens. More specifically, a sample material is irradiated by relatively high power, short pulses from a dye laser. Energy from the pulses is absorbed by the sample material, thereby forming a thermal lens in the area of absorption. The pulse repetition rate is chosen so that the thermal lens is substantially dissipated by the time the next pulse reaches the sample material. A probe light beam, which in a specific embodiment is a relatively low power, continuous wave (cw) laser beam, irradiates the thermal lens formed in the sample material. The intensity characteristics of the probe light beam subsequent to irradiation of the thermal lens is related to changes in the refractive index of the sample material as the thermal lens is formed and dissipated. A plot of the changes in refractive index as a function of time during formation of the thermal lens as reflected by changes in intensity of the probe beam, provides a curve related to molecular relaxation characteristics of the material, and a plot during dissipation of the thermal lens provides a curve related to the thermal diffusivity of the sample material.
