Abstract:
An apparatus and method for generating ions from an aerosol and transferring the ions into a mass analyzer. In the apparatus and method, an aerosol beam is generated, the aerosol beam is directed to a spatial volume outside the mass analyzer, particles in the aerosol beam are ionized to produce the ions, and the ions are collected into the mass analyzer. As such the apparatus includes respectively an aerosol beam generator, an ion source generator, and an ion collector.

An integrated head assembly (100) is disclosed for a nuclear reactor. The preferred integrated head assembly includes a lift assembly (150) that supports the reactor vessel closure head (90) and integrated head assembly for removal, a separate support structure (202) supported by a ring beam (151) that sets atop the reactor vessel closure head, a shroud assembly (200), a seismic support system (300), a baffle assembly (500), a missile shield (400), and a CRDM cooling system. The CRDM cooling system draws cooling air into the baffle assembly, downwardly past the CRDMs (96), outwardly to upright air ducts (600), upwardly to an upper plenum (680), and out of the assembly through the air fans (190). In a second embodiment the integrated head assembly (1100) includes a missile shield (1400) and CRDM cooling system (1600) that permits access to individual CRDMs from above.
Abstract:
The present invention is a method for reducing the slagging and fouling of the surfaces of the waterwalls, firebox, superheater, and reheater of the furnace of a coal-fired steam boiler. The process reduces the firebox exit temperature to below the specific ash melting temperature by injecting the following, either alone or in combination, into ports located in the upper section of the firebox: recirculated flue gas from downstream of the electrostatic precipitator, atomized water, or a sorbent water slurry. All of these materials have a lower temperature than the main flue gas or require additional heat for evaporation. Mixing these materials with the main flue gas from the furnace will not affect the coal combustion process, yet will reduce the temperature of any fly ash particles in the main flue gas to below the specific ash fusion temperature, and thus, prevent slagging and fouling within the furnace.
Abstract:
A method, system, and apparatus for mass spectroscopic analysis of an analyte solution in which a liquid volume of the analyte solution is irradiated with a light source resulting in desorption of solution-specific ions into a surrounding gas to produce gas-phase ions, the gas-phase ions are transferred to an inlet port of a mass analyzer, and the gas-phase ions are mass analyzed. More specifically, the apparatus may include a laser configured to pulse irradiate a surface of the analyte solution, a mass spectrometer configured to mass-analyze the gas-phase ions according to the mass-to-charge ratio, and a transfer mechanism configured to transfer the gas-phase ions to an inlet port of the mass spectrometer.
Abstract:
A mass spectrometer includes an ion source, an extraction device, a TOF mass analyzer, an ion trap mass analyzer, and an ion guiding optical element which guides at least one of extracted ions from the ion source and extracted ion fragments into the TOF mass analyzer in a normal mode of operation and into the IT mass analyzer in a tandem mode of operation. The apparatus operates by producing ions from a sample, extracting the ions from the ion source, selecting between the TOF mass analyzer and the IT mass analyzer, directing extracted ions to the selected mass analyzer, mass-separating the directed ions and fragments of the directed ions according to a mass-to-charge ratio, detecting mass-separated ions with the selected mass analyzer, and producing at least one of a normal mass spectrum and a tandem mass spectrum.

Angle and angular acceleration sensors are fabricated as a layered sandwich structure having a central sensing plate, left and right insulating spacers positioned outside the sensing plate, left and right driver plates positioned outside the insulating spacers, and left and right molded plastic housing shells positioned outside the driver plates for sealing the sensor structure. In an angle sensor embodiment of the invention, the sensing plate includes a peripheral frame and a central plate area mechanically connected to one side of the peripheral frame by way of a pair of beams that serve as a hinge to allow the central plate area of the sensing plate to rotate toward and away from the driver plates sandwiched on either side thereof. In an angular acceleration sensor embodiment of the invention, the sensing plate includes a peripheral frame and a central plate area divided into upper and lower halves, each of which is mechanically connected to the frame by way of a pair of beams that extend inwardly from two opposite sides of the frame and that similarly serve as a hinge to allow the upper and lower halves of the central plate to rotate toward and away from the adjacent driver plates.

A seal assembly for a container includes a locking assembly and a gateway. The locking assembly includes a body and an elongated cable. The elongated cable extends from a proximal end to a distal end. The proximal end is restrained by the body. The distal end is movable from an unlocked position spaced from the body to a locked position restrained by the body. The gateway is configured for selectively interlocking with the locking assembly. The gateway includes a power supply, a radio communication device, a sensor, and a processor electrically coupled therewith. The processor is configured to operate the radio communication device to transmit a first signal upon detection by the sensor of interlocking of the gateway with the locking assembly, and to transmit a second signal upon detection by the sensor that the elongated cable has been cut. Locking assemblies, gateways, devices and methods are also provided.
Abstract:
A mixed parcel packaging system generates packaging instructions for mixed parcel orders, which includes shipping box size, product orientation, and selection and placement of packaging materials. The packaging instructions are based on quantitative product attributes of the products to be shipped, such that the fill volume of the shipping box is minimized subject to product fragility, leakage factors, and external environmental factors.
