摘要: A puncture resistant composite comprises a first textile layer and a second textile layer, each of which comprises a plurality of yarns or fibers having a tenacity of about 8 or more grams per denier. The layers are stacked so that the upper surface of the second textile layer is adjacent to the lower surface of the first textile layer. At least one of the lower surface of the first textile layer and the upper surface of the second textile layer comprises about 10 wt. % or less, based on the total weight of the textile layer, of a coating comprising a plurality of particles having a diameter of about 20 μm or less. The coating can also comprise a binder. The composite can also be used in combination with other puncture resistant and/or ballistic resistant materials or components. A process for producing a puncture resistant composite is also provided.

摘要: An inventive solid phase forming process, and related structure, using conventional pelletized thermoplastic compositions to form the of a non-textile fabric by coining a single pellet or briquette of the polymer into an individual element in a single forming step. The steps of the process generally include: a) positioning a pellet in or adjacent to a mold cavity, and b) forcing the pellet into contact with the mold surfaces of the mold cavity to plastically deform the pellet to cause the pellet to adapt the shape of the mold cavity. The mold cavity has a shape to form the desired element, and its volume is substantially the same as the volume of the pellet. The forcing step or act preferably uses an energy and speed where the pellet superplastically deforms to substantially fill the volume of the mold cavity. This process is repeated with the particular element being formed in the appropriate order to form interconnected plates and rivets, as an example, with the final result being a non-textile fabric. The elements formed by the inventive process can have any of a variety of shapes, and can form base units for the formation of the non textile fabric of two, three or more elements. This inventive process eliminates the need to first form the pelletized polymer into a sheet or other type of preform prior to the forming of the final product.

摘要: The present invention relates to compositions comprising rigid-rod polymers and carbon nanotubes. The compositions comprise dispersed carbon nanotubes aligned with rigid-rod polymers. The alignment of the nanotubes and polymers can be liquid crystalline. The rigid-rod polymers of this invention include, but are not limited to, polymers and copolymers comprising benzobisazole, pyridobisimidazole and benzamidazobenzo-phenanthroline repeat units. Dispersion of carbon nanotubes is achieved by in-situ polymerization in the presence of the carbon nanotubes, which may be either single-wall or multi-wall or a combination of both. The polymer compositions comprising carbon nanotubes may be spun into fibers or formed into films. The strength of the resulting fibers of the present invention is significantly greater than that of fibers without carbon nanotubes.

摘要: A ballistic protection composite shield is disclosed, with improved next-to-skin properties, and improved flexibility. Needlepunching technology permits the manufacture of the wear layer using any type of fiber, and advantageously allows distinct layering, fiber blending, compressibility, controlled fiber orientation, and increases z-directional strength. Needlepunching the nonwoven wear layer to the woven antiballistic layer mechanically interconnects the two layers, eliminating the need for an adhesive bond and increasing the flexibility of the shield. An abrasion resistant strike layer, such as leather, increases the life of the shield.

摘要: Articles, including fabrics and film layers, are disclosed which can protect against multiple hazards, including radiation, chemical, biological agents, metal projectiles and fire hazards. In some embodiments, the fabrics and films of the present invention are used to produce garments having protection against multiple hazards and superior heat dissipating properties. A radiation protective compound is preferably created by mixing a radiopaque material, such as barium, bismuth, tungsten or their compounds, with powdered polymer, pelletized polymer or a liquid solution, emulsion or suspension of a polymer in solvent or water. This radiation protective mixture can then be laminated or otherwise adhered to other types of protective films or fabric, such as the protective polymer films or fabrics used for chemical protective garments, biological protective garments, bullet proof vests or fire retardant garments. The principles of this invention can also be applied to a broad range of other articles including surgical hoods, hospital gowns, gloves, patient drapes, partitions, coverings, jumpsuits, ponchos, uniforms, fatigues, tents, probes, envelopes, pouches, wallpaper, liners, drywall, house sidings, house foundations, house roofings etc.
