An armor composite material has been invented which contains a ballistic fabric which has been impregnated with shear thickening fluid. This invention offers a ballistic resistant material that is more flexible and less bulky than comparable, conventional ballistic fabric. The invented material offers superior ballistic performance compared to conventional ballistic fabric-based materials of equal thickness. The invented material can be applied to applications requiring armor that is compact and/or flexible, such as body armor, protective clothing and flexible protective devices and shields, and stab resistant clothing and devices.

A puncture resistant composite comprises a first textile layer and a second textile layer, each of which comprises a plurality of yarns or fibers having a tenacity of about 8 or more grams per denier. The layers are stacked so that the upper surface of the second textile layer is adjacent to the lower surface of the first textile layer. At least one of the lower surface of the first textile layer and the upper surface of the second textile layer comprises about 10 wt. % or less, based on the total weight of the textile layer, of a coating comprising a plurality of particles having a diameter of about 20 μm or less. The coating can also comprise a binder. The composite can also be used in combination with other puncture resistant and/or ballistic resistant materials or components. A process for producing a puncture resistant composite is also provided.

A ballistic and/or fire barrier for protecting objects in an interior of a vehicle due to projectile penetration and/or fire includes one or more layers of high strength fabric positioned towards an outer shell of the vehicle. The high strength fabric is substantially fixedly or fixedly positioned with respect to the outer shell of the vehicle. In another embodiment, the ballistic and/or fire barrier protects objects in a structure from damage due to projectile penetration. The ballistic and/or fire barrier includes at least one layer of high strength fabric positioned towards an outer housing of the structure. The high strength fabric is substantially fixedly positioned with respect to the structure towards either the inner or outer surface of the outer housing. In another embodiment of the present invention, a ballistic barrier protects a wearer of the ballistic barrier from damage due to projectile penetration. The ballistic barrier comprises first and second portions positioned generally parallel each other. The first portion includes one or more layers of high strength fabric while the second portion is generally impact-resistant. Preferably, the layer of high strength fabric comprise a plurality of plies. One of the plies can comprise woven fibers. Another of the plies can be a felt. Also preferably, the layer of high strength fabric in the ballistic barrier embodiments comprises a polymer material such as one or more of aramid material, polyethylene material, and polybenzoxazole material.

An inventive solid phase forming process, and related structure, using conventional pelletized thermoplastic compositions to form the of a non-textile fabric by coining a single pellet or briquette of the polymer into an individual element in a single forming step. The steps of the process generally include: a) positioning a pellet in or adjacent to a mold cavity, and b) forcing the pellet into contact with the mold surfaces of the mold cavity to plastically deform the pellet to cause the pellet to adapt the shape of the mold cavity. The mold cavity has a shape to form the desired element, and its volume is substantially the same as the volume of the pellet. The forcing step or act preferably uses an energy and speed where the pellet superplastically deforms to substantially fill the volume of the mold cavity. This process is repeated with the particular element being formed in the appropriate order to form interconnected plates and rivets, as an example, with the final result being a non-textile fabric. The elements formed by the inventive process can have any of a variety of shapes, and can form base units for the formation of the non textile fabric of two, three or more elements. This inventive process eliminates the need to first form the pelletized polymer into a sheet or other type of preform prior to the forming of the final product.

The present invention relates to compositions comprising rigid-rod polymers and carbon nanotubes. The compositions comprise dispersed carbon nanotubes aligned with rigid-rod polymers. The alignment of the nanotubes and polymers can be liquid crystalline. The rigid-rod polymers of this invention include, but are not limited to, polymers and copolymers comprising benzobisazole, pyridobisimidazole and benzamidazobenzo-phenanthroline repeat units. Dispersion of carbon nanotubes is achieved by in-situ polymerization in the presence of the carbon nanotubes, which may be either single-wall or multi-wall or a combination of both. The polymer compositions comprising carbon nanotubes may be spun into fibers or formed into films. The strength of the resulting fibers of the present invention is significantly greater than that of fibers without carbon nanotubes.

A ballistic protection composite shield is disclosed, with improved next-to-skin properties, and improved flexibility. Needlepunching technology permits the manufacture of the wear layer using any type of fiber, and advantageously allows distinct layering, fiber blending, compressibility, controlled fiber orientation, and increases z-directional strength. Needlepunching the nonwoven wear layer to the woven antiballistic layer mechanically interconnects the two layers, eliminating the need for an adhesive bond and increasing the flexibility of the shield. An abrasion resistant strike layer, such as leather, increases the life of the shield.

A composite having a plurality of filaments arranged in a fibrous web that is held together in a unitary structure by a domain matrix. The domain matrix comprises a plurality of matrix islands that individually connect, or bond, at least two filaments, to thereby hold the filaments in a unitary structure. Portions of the filament lengths within the unitary structure are free of matrix islands, causing the domain matrix to be discontinuous. The composite possesses a greater flexibility than coated structures. The composite may be formed into cross-plied structures. A method of making the composite also is disclosed.

Articles, including fabrics and film layers, are disclosed which can protect against multiple hazards, including radiation, chemical, biological agents, metal projectiles and fire hazards. In some embodiments, the fabrics and films of the present invention are used to produce garments having protection against multiple hazards and superior heat dissipating properties. A radiation protective compound is preferably created by mixing a radiopaque material, such as barium, bismuth, tungsten or their compounds, with powdered polymer, pelletized polymer or a liquid solution, emulsion or suspension of a polymer in solvent or water. This radiation protective mixture can then be laminated or otherwise adhered to other types of protective films or fabric, such as the protective polymer films or fabrics used for chemical protective garments, biological protective garments, bullet proof vests or fire retardant garments. The principles of this invention can also be applied to a broad range of other articles including surgical hoods, hospital gowns, gloves, patient drapes, partitions, coverings, jumpsuits, ponchos, uniforms, fatigues, tents, probes, envelopes, pouches, wallpaper, liners, drywall, house sidings, house foundations, house roofings etc.
