An instrument stabilizer minimizes unwanted motion at the distal end of a surgical instrument by applying a damping force to the instrument. According to one embodiment, the instrument stabilizer preferably includes a cannula through which an instrument can extend, and a distal bushing adapted to contact the instrument. The instrument stabilizer also includes a proximal housing which includes a mechanism which applies a stabilizing or damping force to the proximal portion of the cannula. The mechanism which applies the force may be, by way of example, one or more of elastic bands, springs, struts, etc. When a surgical instrument is extended through the cannula and contacts the bushing, movement of the cannula and consequently the surgical instrument is damped by the stabilization force on the proximal portion of the cannula. In addition, a swivel device for angularly orienting the instrument stabilizer relative to a body of patient is also provided.

When the tube is subject to rotational force in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction, movement of the tube in the second longitudinal direction relative to the shaft is permitted. An endoscopic bioptome includes a flexible coil having a lumen with an axially displaceable wire extending therethrough. The proximal ends of the coil and wire are coupled to a manual actuator for axially displacing one of the coil and wire relative to the other. The distal end of the coil is coupled to either a jaw assembly or a cylinder. The jaw assembly includes a pair of jaws each having a distal jaw cup having a proximal neck and a relatively narrow bent resilient arm. The distal end of the wire is coupled to the other of the cylinder or the jaw assembly. The cylinder is slidable over the jaw assembly. Axial movement of either the wire relative to the coil or vice versa moves the cylinder over the arms of the jaws and over the necks of the jaw cups, thereby forcing the jaw cups together in a biting action. In one embodiment, the axially displaceable wire is provided with a coaxial stopping band or sleeve which stops its movement as soon as the jaws close. In another embodiment, the cylinder is provided with an annular stopping crimp which limits relative displacement of the cylinder and the jaw assembly. In a third embodiment, the cylinder is provided with a radially inward flange and the coil is provided with a reduced diameter portion. In a fourth embodiment, the jaw cups are provided with outer surface steps. In all of the embodiments, the limitation of displacement has the effect of limiting the cutting force applied to the jaws.

A non-metallic end effector for use in an endoscopic surgical tool includes a metallic core for strength and for providing a selected electrode surface on the end effector. Selectively conductive end effectors are manufactured by insert molding a plastic or ceramic or other non-conductive body around a metallic or otherwise conductive core. The conductive core is exposed on a selected portion of the working surface of the end effector and extends through the non-conductive body of the end effector for coupling to an electrical source. Selectively conductive end effectors of this type can also be manufactured by coating a cast end effector member with a non-conductive polymer or by metallically plating a non-conductive ceramic end effector member. By extending the conductive core of a selectively conductive end effector member to the pivot hole of the member, electrical coupling can be made through the clevis and tube of an endoscopic instrument. By extending the conductive core to the actuation bore of an end effector member, electrical coupling can be made through the push rod or other actuation member in an endoscopic instrument. Using both techniques, a bipolar selective cautery end effector can be provided on an endoscopic instrument.

Metal is cut from the middle portion of the cylinder to form two tapered arms which terminate at a cylindrical portion of the open end of the cylinder. At least one of the two tapered arms is bent away from the other to form the jaw assembly.

A jaw assembly for an endoscopic bioptome includes a pair of opposed end effectors having resilient arms formed from a super-elastic metal. The distal ends of the resilient arms terminate in end effector jaw cups which are also preferably formed from super-elastic metal, while the proximal portions of the resilient arms include angled portions which urge the jaw cups away from each other. The jaw cups are brought together into a biting action by a cylinder having a sharp distal edge which moves relative to over the arms of the end effectors. As the resilient arms are formed from a superelastic metal, they exhibit very high resiliency and durability even after numerous uses. Several embodiments of jaws and different ways of coupling the jaws to the distal end of the bioptome are disclosed.
