    Abstract: A terminal device includes receiver circuitry that receives parameter data from a base station in a cellular wireless telecommunication network. The terminal device also includes a storage device that stores an identifier that uniquely identifies the terminal device, and control circuitry that controls the terminal device. The control circuitry controls the terminal device, when operating in an idle mode, to perform cell reselection using at least one cell reselection parameter derived from the received parameter data and the stored unique identifier.

    Abstract: A communications device transmits data to a mobile communications network or receives data from a mobile communications network. The mobile communications network includes plural infrastructure equipment each providing a wireless access interface for the communications device. The wireless access interfaces may have a different frequency but operate in accordance with the same standard or may use different radio access technologies. The communications device selects one of the wireless access interface by generating a signal reception metric for each of the wireless access interfaces provided by the one or more neighbouring infrastructure equipment and each if the wireless access interfaces provided by the selected infrastructure equipment, and selects or reselects one of the wireless access interfaces provided by the one or more neighbouring infrastructure equipment or one of the wireless access interfaces provided by the selected infrastructure equipment in accordance with predetermined criteria based on the generated signal reception metrics.

    Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system comprises a base station and a terminal device. The system supports a virtual carrier mode of operation in which downlink communications are made by the base station using a radio interface that spans a system frequency bandwidth while the terminal device is configured to receive at least some communications from the base station within a restricted subset of transmission resources selected from within the system frequency bandwidth. The wireless telecommunications system supports terminal devices in both a radio resource control connected mode and a radio resource control idle mode. When there is to be a change in system information the base station transmits to the terminal device an indication that updated system information is to be broadcast by the base station and this indication is received by the terminal device while in the connected mode. Before seeking to acquire the updated system information, the terminal device transitions from the connected mode to the idle mode. The terminal device then seeks to acquire updated system information while in the idle mode. The base station restricts the transmission of user-plane data to the terminal device until the terminal device re-enters connected mode. Transitioning to idle mode to acquire system information can help to address issues associated with managing the communication of both system information and user-plane data using the restricted subset of transmission resources.

    Abstract: A wireless telecommunication system comprises a base station and a terminal device (UE). The UE is configured to determine its mobility status and an associated reliability, e.g. an indication of the extent to which the UE is moving and the confidence in this determination. In some cases the reliability may be based on how the UE determined its mobility status. For example, if the UE determined itself to be of relatively low mobility because it has an internal configuration setting indicating it is deployed in a fixed position, the reliability of this mobility status may be considered to be greater than if the UE determined itself to be of relatively low mobility because it has not recently undergone many base station handovers. The UE is configured to convey an indication of the mobility status and the reliability to the base station. The base station may then configure the UE for operation within the wireless telecommunications system in a manner that takes account of both the mobility status and the reliability for the mobility status. This can help optimise configuration settings for the UE which depend on device mobility.

    Abstract: A communications device can identify one or more sections of plural predetermined sections, divided into time-units, of shared communications resources of a wireless access interface for transmitting data signals to one or more other communications device. The communications device detects whether another of the one or more communications devices are transmitting signals in one or more of the identified sections of the shared communications resources in at least one time divided unit, and if signals transmitted by another of the communications devices are not detected, the device transmits signals in the identified one or more predetermined sections of the shared communications resources for at least one of the time divided units, and then, after a collision avoidance time, detects for at least one subsequent time unit whether another of the one or more communications devices transmits signals in one or more of the identified sections of the shared communications resources.
