Abstract:
A filter and filter material for providing or treating potable water is provided. The filter includes a housing having an inlet and an outlet, a filter material disposed within the housing, the filter material formed at least in part from a mixture of a plurality of mesoporous and microporous activated carbon particles. Preferably, at least some of the mesoporous activated carbon filter particles are coated with a cationic polymer, and even more preferably, at least some of the particles are coated with a cationic polymer and silver or a silver containing material. Kits comprising filters and information relating to the reduction, killing or removal of bacteria, viruses, microbials, and TTHM are also provided.
Abstract:
Perfuming or flavoring microcapsules that include a fireproofing agent in addition to a perfuming or flavoring ingredient and a carrier material, so that the microcapsules can reduce the occurrence or an explosion of reduced violence when suspended in hot air during their preparation. Also, methods of making these microcapsules and their use in perfumed, food, beverage or pharmaceutical products.
Abstract:
The present application discloses an agglomerate. The agglomerate comprises a crystalline matrix. The agglomerate may additionally comprise abrasive particles. The agglomerate has a normalized bulk density of less than about 0.38. The present application additionally discloses a method of manufacturing the agglomerate. The agglomerate is manufactured by forming a mixture comprising an abrasive particle with a sol, the sol comprising an oxide and water and introducing the mixture into a spray dryer. The mixture is then dried in the spray dryer. The mixture is then fired, for example in an oven. The resulting agglomerates comprise abrasive particles retained within a crystalline matrix of the oxide. The present invention additionally discloses methods of using the agglomerates of the resent invention.
Abstract:
Microcapsules are prepared by a process comprising the steps of (i) spray-drying a solution or dispersion of a wall-forming material in order to obtain intermediate microcapsules and (ii) reducing the water-solubility of at least the outside of the intermediate microcapsules. Suitable wall-forming materials include proteins such as albumin and gelatin. The microcapsules have walls of 40-500 nm thick and are useful in ultrasonic imaging. The control of median size, size distribution and degree of insolubilization and cross-linking of the wall-forming material allows novel microsphere preparations to be produced.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to catalysts in mesoporous structures. In a preferred embodiment, the invention comprises a method for encapsulating a dispersed insoluble compound in a mesoporous structure comprising combining a soluble oxide precursor, a solvent, and a surfactant to form a mixture; dispersing an insoluble compound in the mixture; spray-drying the mixture to produce dry powder; and calcining the powder to yield a porous structure comprising the dispersed insoluble compound.
Abstract:
A microcapsule capable of thoroughly encapsulating environmentally-sensitive or volatile core materials and capable of releasing said core material on contact with water. A process for manufacture of water soluble microcapsules comprising the admixture of a water soluble cellulosic material, a water soluble glucopyranosidyl material, at least two surfactants and core material, subjecting said mixture to an abrupt pressure change and drying the pressure-treated mixture.

Abstract:
The present invention provides hollow borosilicate microspheres having a mean particle size between 15 and 20 microns, and a true density below 0.25 g/cc. The invention also provides a method for making such microspheres comprising spray drying a solution of sodium silicate and sodium borate in a spray tower to form a precursor, milling the precursor, and heating the crushed precursor to a temperature in excess of 600.degree. F. to form hollow borosilicate microspheres.

Abstract:
Microcapsules which comprise, (A) a wall comprising a mixture of zirconium chloride and at least one member selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) and its derivatives, and (B) a core material enclosed with the wall; and a process for producing the same. In this invention, any substance can be used as the core material irrespective of its hydrophicity or hydrophobicity, and there can be obtained microcapsules excellent in heat resistance, water resistance, and transparency by simple steps.
