摘要: Binary bits on a magnetic storage medium are read by a magnetic head that moves at approximately constant speed relative to the medium. The medium includes several elongated adjacent magnetic tracks, each including a succession of longitudinally positioned polarized magnetic flux variations arranged in elemental areas of equal length along the length of each track. Adjacent areas are susceptible to having like and unlike magnetic flux polarizations. The head and tracks are positioned so the head straddles a pair of the tracks and is simultaneously responsive to flux variations in the straddled tracks. The head and track move relative to each other so the head is responsive to successive flux variations as time progresses. The areas are arranged so there is always a magnetic flux polarization transition at predetermined equi-spaced positions along the track length at a boundary between a pair of elemental areas. The transition direction at each boundary indicates a binary bit value. The fluxes of the elemental areas between adjacent boundaries selectively have different polarity variations to assure that like polarity transitions at each boundary represent like binary bit values.

摘要: A magnetic head reads data from reference zones on tracks at differing ra of a magnetic memory disc rotating at constant angular velocity. Each track includes at least one reference zone, each of which includes a plurality of initial cells. Each cell has magnetic flux variations, which when read by the head result in a first waveform that includes undulations enabling the head to be properly servo controlled to a position over the center of the track and a further undulation that is distinguishable from the head positioning undulations. The initial cells are followed by plural binary bit representing data cells each having magnetic flux variations which when read by the head result in a second waveform including a data representing undulation that is generally the same amplitude as the further undulations. The undulations are susceptible to having varying amplitudes as the head is positioned at different positions of the disc. The peak amplitude of the further undulations, for one reference zone, is detected. In response to the detected peak amplitude of the further undulations a threshold for the data representing undulations is set and maintained while the second waveforms for the cells of the reference zone are read by the head. The set threshold and amplitude of the second waveforms are compared to enable the binary value of each data cell to be determined. A feedback look controls the gain of an amplifier that derives the signal to be detected for peak amplitude, except immediately after a change is ordered for a transition to read data from heads on opposite faces of the disc, at which time the gain is maximized.

摘要: A positioning system for electrical components to be mounted on a carrier includes establishing a first reference system and bringing the carrier on which the components are to be mounted to a predetermined position in relation to the first system. The locations for the articles to be mounted on the carrier are defined. A second reference system is established with respect to the first reference system and the carrier is positioned in relation to the articles to be mounted on the carrier using the second reference system. Each reference system is defined by at least three fixed points against which the carrier comes to bear and the points of the second reference system duplicate the points of the first reference system so that the carrier is in the exact position to enable the components to be mounted at the exact predetermined location.

摘要: A high capacity associative read/write memory is provided which includes storage means which can be read from or written into and having memory units of equal capacity each containing an equal and predetermined number of levels. Addressing means are connected to the storage means to select storage levels in each memory unit and to select the required memory location on the selected level. Associative means connected to the storage means consists of a plurality of comparators equal in number to the number of levels in each memory unit multiplied by the number of memory units. The comparators perform a comparison between the content of a data descriptor at the input to the associative memory and the content of the information read from the memory on the selected level.

摘要: A system for recognizing printed characters each composed of a predetermined number of vertical lines arranged in accordance with a given code wherein the characters are read serially as a result of the document being moved between an input station and an output station of a transport mechanism associated with a reading device. The reading device includes at least one amplitude discriminating circuit having various threshold levels applied to it. Means are provided for locating the point at which the reading of the document commences and for reading the document and generating a read signal during the whole period when the document is being read. A buffer store is connected to the reading means for temporarily storing read characters which are satisfactory for use. Repeat reading means are connected to means for reading the document and to the buffer store.
