A buffer management system for cooperating with a packet based switching system is proposed. The purpose of this system is to reduce traffic congestion, ameliorate its effects, provide fairness to each data source, and to increase functionality while respecting advantageous system characteristics. Fabric output buffers include an arbitration function, a quality of service function, and are associated with individual routing tables. The system uses shallow logic that allows for single clock cycle operation even at high clock speeds. In order to provide for system control of bandwidth, sources with bandwidth practices counter to system interests are addressed. Where there is a conflict of sources over a resource, the buffer management system arbitrates traffic to resolve conflicts in a timely manner while fairly allocating traffic share using a weighted round robin arbitration scheme.

One method includes programming user data in pages associated with a set of wordlines of an erase block of a non-volatile, solid-state storage element. The method further includes selecting at least one of the wordlines of the set programmed with the user data and restricting further programming of user data in the pages associated with the selected wordline. In some embodiments, the selected wordline occurs subsequent to the pages associated with the other wordlines of the set in a page programming order for the erase block.

The dynamic server switching system maintains a list in each client which identifies the primary server for that client and the preferred communication method as well as a hierarchy of successively secondary servers and communication method pairs. In the event that the client does not have requests served by the designated primary server or the designated communication method, the system traverses the list to ascertain the identity of the first available alternate server-communication method pair. The client then uses this retrieved data to initiate future requests. The client periodically tests the primary server-communication method pair to determine whether the fault has been cleared. If so, the client reestablishes the originally selected primary server-communication method pair as the request route. This system dynamically load balances in the face of failures, handles transient faults and can use a neuromorphic processing element to monitor system activity and rewrite entries in the lists as a function of changing system activity. In this manner, the system provides dynamic server switching for maximum service availability without consuming significant processing resources.

In continuously casting molten metal into cast product by a twin-belt machine, it is desirable to achieve dramatic increases in speed (linear feet per minute) at which cast product exits the machine, particularly in installations where steel cast product is intended to feed a downstream regular rolling mill (as distinct from a planetary mill) operating in tandem with the twin-belt caster. Such high-speed casting produces product with a relatively thin shell and molten interior, and the shell tends to bulge outwardly due to metallostatic head pressure of the molten center. A number of cooperative features enable high-speed, twin-belt casting: (1) Each casting belt is slidably supported adjacent to the caster exit pulley for bulge control and enhanced cooling of cast product. (2) Lateral skew steering of each belt provides an effective increase in moving mold length plus a continuity of heat transfer not obtained with prior art belt steering apparatus. (3) The exiting slab is contained and supported downstream from the casting machine to prevent bulging of the shell of the cast product, and (4) spray cooling is incorporated in the exit containment apparatus for secondary cooling of cast product.

A symmetrical belt tensioning system and apparatus for twin-belt continuous casting machines are disclosed. A rigid squaring shaft passes through a hollow tension roll and is rigidly secured to torque arms at opposite ends of the roll assuring that this roll remains parallel with the driving roll at the other end of the carriage throughout the range of tensioning travel, these arms each being associated with tension thrust means. The geometrical relationships assure that tension in the casting belts remains essentially directly proportional to the fluid pressure in the thrust cylinders, while a pre-loading arrangement removes back lash from the pivots to improve steering precision and also provides mechanical advantage. Independent adjustment of the displacement of each end of the tension-steering roll from the pass line is provided by sleeves associated with the squaring shaft and bearings in the interior of the hollow roll. A high belt tension force can be applied because there are two main large diameter rolls at opposite ends of each carriage defining the belt path as a symmetrical oval shape. Wide casting belts of 116 inches in width or more are precisely steered and tensioned for continuously casting slabs 100 inches or more in width.
