    Abstract: An impact sensor includes a piezoelectric transducer operatively connected to a chromic device. The chromic device includes a chromic material that changes from a first color state to a second color state in response to electric power generated by the piezoelectric transducer when exposed to a given level of impact force. The chromic material is bistable so that the chromic material remains in the second color state for a significant amount of time. An impact force to which the sensor has been subjected may be quantified by observing the chromic device. In one embodiment, the chromic material is an electrochromic material, such as a viologen, that changes through a color gradient of light transmission states from the first color state to the second color state. A printed color gradient may be used to aid in quantifying the impact force. In another embodiment, the chromic device includes a thermochromic material.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to trivalent chromate conversion coatings for plated metals, and more particularly, to methods for reducing hexavalent chromium in trivalent chromate conversion coatings. In one embodiment, such method includes placing a metal article having a trivalent chromate conversion coating in a reducing solution. The trivalent chromate conversion coating includes hexavalent chromium and the reducing solution including a reducing agent, which reduces the hexavalent chromium so as to reduce or eliminate the hexavalent chromium on the plated metal article.

    Abstract: A paint is disclosed herein which comprises a binder having acid-degradable groups, and a photoacid generator that provides photogenerated acid upon exposure to UV light. The binder is water insoluble before exposure to UV light, and binder is water-removable after degradation of the acid degradable groups by the photogenerated acid. A process for applying and removing paint is further disclosed which comprises applying the paint comprising an acid degradable binder and UV sensitive photoacid generator to a surface, and hardening the paint by drying or crosslinking; and removing by exposing the paint to UV light, and directing a high pressure water stream to the exposed paint. The paint is useful as a road paint.
