Abstract: A vacuum arc thruster device having a cathode rod disposed within a concentric insulator tube, and an anode electrode located at the distal edge of the insulator tube, separated from the cathode rod by the insulator tube. A controlled feeding mechanism moves the cathode towards the distal exit plane in a helical motion, the cathode rotating as it moves forward. The cathode rod is fixed in the center of a headless screw segment, which is rotated within a screw thread on the internal surface of a cylindrical wall of the device. As the erosion rate is concentrated at the exit plane, the screw action path enables uniform erosion around the cathode circumference, and cathode linear motion that can be matched to the radial erosion rate. The feeding rate and hence the thrust are proportional to the input power, which can be regulated by the pulse frequency.

Abstract: Single bulk unimorph piezoelectric elements, with interdigitated electrodes aligned obliquely relative to the direction perpendicular to the axis of the element, such that a torsional response is induced into the element. When such elements are used as a beam structure, with angularly oriented electrodes on both opposite surfaces of the beam, and with their orientations at mutually opposite angles, motion ranging from pure torsional rotation to pure bending can be obtained, depending on the comparative level and polarity of the voltages applied to each of the two electrode sets. If such elements are used as the spiral support arms of a central platform, a large displacement of the stage can be achieved. Due to the oblique orientation of the IDE's, the piezoelectric transduction induces torsional deformation in the spirals, and this torsion is converted by the spiral arms to a parallel out-of-plane platform motion.

Abstract: A high-efficiency, motorless purge system for closed-cycle absorption heat pumps, adapted for both absorption heat transformers and absorption chillers, using a series of valves to control the entry and exit of absorbent solution into a low-pressure, secondary absorption vessel. A small percentage of the total circulating solution is forced under pressure into the secondary absorption vessel via a spray nozzle, causing adiabatic absorption of absorbate vapor by the solution. Non-condensable gases accumulate in the secondary absorber until a certain vapor pressure is reached, upon which, gas, and possibly liquid, are transferred to an exhaust vessel having an exit vent for non-condensable gases. In an absorption chiller system, the secondary absorber has an internal heat exchanger to lower the temperature of the solution within, to facilitate the absorption process.
