Disclosed is a method for producing at least one of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid from an alcohol in a liquid phase through a simple process. Namely, at least one of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is produced by dehydrating and oxidizing an alcohol in a liquid phase at 110 to 250° C. in the presence of molecular oxygen and a noble metal-containing catalyst. Alternatively, at least one of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is produced by dehydrating and oxidizing an alcohol in a liquid phase in the presence of molecular oxygen, a noble metal-containing catalyst, and an acidic substance.

The present invention provides: a palladium-containing catalyst which is used for highly selectively or highly productively producing an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid from an olefin or in that way producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid from an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde; a method for producing the catalyst; and a method for highly selectively or highly productively producing an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid from an olefin or in that way producing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid from an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde. In particular, the present invention resides in a palladium-containing catalyst comprising 0.001 to 0.40 mole of tellurium metal to 1.0 mole of palladium metal. This catalyst can be preferably produced by a method having a step of reducing a compound containing palladium atom in its oxidized state and tellurium atom in its oxidized state by a reducing agent.

This polarizing apparatus can be used as a polarizer for a liquid crystal display device (optical transducer), or can be disposed as a preliminary stage before a polarizer. Molecules of an optically active material (1) rotates the plane of polarization through an optical rotation angle &thgr;1 when a first vector component 10 of light having a horizontal plane of polarization passes, and rotates the plane of polarization through an optical rotation angle &thgr;2 (>&thgr;1) when a second vector component of light having a vertical plane of polarization passes. Therefore, light having a horizontal plane of polarization is amplified, and light having a vertical plane of polarization is reduced. To bestow the anisotropy of the optical rotation angle on the large number of molecules making up the optically active material molecular constituents of the optically active material are substantially aligned in three dimensions.
