    Abstract: The present invention describes a microresonator that can be used as a 1:f variable coupler in a unit cell. It is described how a cascade of unit cells can be used to form a tunable, higher-order RF-filter with reconfigurable passbands. The disclosed filter structure can be utilized for the narrowband channelization of RF signals that have been modulated onto optical carriers. It is also disclosed how to utilize add/drop capabilities of the contemplated microdisks to confer connectivity and cascading in two dimensions. The present invention can conveniently provide a wavelength division multiplexing router, where an array of unit cells as provided herein can form a programmable optical switching matrix, through electronic programming of filter parameters.

    Abstract: An apparatus for preparing a RF radar transmit waveform and for decoding RF return waveforms comprising: a RF-lightwave encoder and a decoding preprocessor to phase-encode the RF radar transmit waveform and partially decode the return signal, the encoder including switched optical delay lines for producing desired RF phase shifts, and the decoding preprocessor including a tapped optical delay line and optical delay lines that counteract the delays imposed by the delay lines of the encoder, wherein the RF-lightwave encoder and the decoders allow shorter compressed pulses and larger pulse-compression ratios to be achieved than can be obtained using conventional electronic approaches. Wideband transmit waveforms can be generated due to the use of the switched optical delay lines and, unlike prior art approaches, is not restricted to single-frequency waveforms. The taps can be weighted to accomplish objectives such as reduction of side lobes in the compressed pulse.

    Abstract: A low-loss substrate system is provided for carrying and interconnecting optoelectronic/microwave circuits. The system includes a high-resistivity substrate, e.g., silicon of resistivity >1.times.10.sup.3 ohm-centimeter. A dielectric layer, e.g., silicon dioxide, is preferably deposited over at least a portion of the substrate. Low-loss microwave transmission members and passive microwave components, e.g., capacitors and spiral inductors, can be fabricated directly on the dielectric layer with thin-film techniques. Optoelectronic and microwave integrated circuits are preferably mounted on the substrate system with solder bumps and bonding pads. Other portions of the substrate can define grooves for receiving optical fibers. To enhance optical alignment, the grooves and bonding pads are preferably located with photolithographic techniques. The substrate system is especially suited for optoelectronic/microwave circuits that are realized with hybrid integration structures.
