Abstract: An energy storage assembly includes a plurality of battery cells electrically connected to each other to form a battery pack in which the battery cells are grouped together to form a first stack of cells and a second stack of cells. The energy storage assembly also includes a first barrier disposed between the first stack of cells and the second stack of cells to reduce heat transfer between the first stack of cells and the second stack of cells. The energy storage assembly further includes a coolant plate disposed along the battery cells. The coolant plate defines a channel for guiding a fluid therethrough to thermally transfer heat away from the battery cells. The coolant plate defines a slot spaced from the channel, and the slot axially aligns with the first barrier to reduce heat transfer between the first stack of cells and the second stack of cells.

Abstract: A battery module includes a first battery cell and a neighboring second battery cell, and an insulating member positioned therebetween. The battery module also includes a battery module enclosure surrounded by an external environment and configured to house each of the first battery cell, the second battery cell, and the insulating member. The battery module additionally includes a battery module cover mounted to the battery module enclosure. The battery module cover includes a vent feature configured to expel high temperature gases from the first battery cell and divert the high temperature gases away from the second battery cell directly to the external environment. The cover is thereby configured to minimize transfer of the high temperature gases from the first battery cell to the second battery cell and control propagation of a thermal runaway event in the battery module.

Abstract: A rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) for a vehicle having thermal runaway propagation mitigation includes at least two battery modules disposed within the RESS. Each battery module includes a plurality of battery cell groups, and a thermal barrier disposed at an end portion of each battery module. Each thermal barrier extends along a width of the end portion of each battery module, and includes a plurality of openings having at least one opening aligned with each of the plurality of battery cell groups of each battery module, and a relief portion adjacent to each of the plurality of openings. The relief portions prevent hot gas and/or particles from venting through an opening adjacent to the relief portion when in a closed position, and allows the hot gas and/or particles to vent through the opening adjacent to the relief portion when in an open position.

Abstract: A prismatic battery includes a prismatic battery can having an upper region, a vertical Z-direction along a height of the prismatic battery can, and a horizontal Y-direction along a width of the prismatic battery can. A plurality of stacked battery layers is disposed inside of the prismatic battery can. The stacked battery layers have an in-plane direction and a transverse direction that is perpendicular to the in-plane direction. The stacked battery layers have an orthotropic thermal conductivity that has a high, in-plane thermal conductivity in the in-plane direction and has a low, transverse thermal conductivity in the transverse direction. The stacked battery layers are folded inside of the prismatic battery can in an Inverted-U geometric configuration. The Inverted-U geometry is configured to provide a longer thermal delay time and a reduced peak temperature in response to a Thermal Runaway event occurring in an adjacent battery can.

Abstract: In some aspects, a battery module includes a plurality of high energy density-based cells sandwiched between low energy density-based cells provides for a relatively thinner cell barrier between groups of cells, which reduces space required for mitigation solution for thermal runaway propagation (TRP) while maintaining a relatively high range of miles in an electric vehicle per individual charge. In some embodiments, the module includes bus bar and tab configurations on the front and rear portions which enables an efficient connection of components using the above-referenced combination of high and low energy density-based cells for optimal performance.

Abstract: A battery pack includes one or more battery modules subject to generating hot vent gasses during a thermal runaway event, a housing enclosing the battery modules therein and defining perimeter vent openings, and a plurality of perimeter vent assemblies. Each vent assembly is connected adjacent a corresponding one of the vent openings, and includes a translatable member, a gas diffuser block, and at least one sacrificial post. The gas diffuser block is connected to an outer surface of the housing, covers a respective one of the vent openings, and defines a plurality of orifices. The at least one sacrificial post is configured to melt or incinerate at a predetermined temperature to cause the translatable member to translate relative to the diffuser block and thereby prevent the vent gasses from escaping the battery pack.

Abstract: A turbocharger for an internal combustion engine having a close coupled catalyst assembly includes a turbine housing having a toroidal-shaped low pressure exhaust gas chamber having a plurality of vanes disposed proximate the outer circumferential wall of the low pressure exhaust gas chamber. The vanes are arranged to disrupt the rotational flow of the exhaust gases as they exit the turbine housing to provide a more even flow though the catalyst element of the close coupled catalyst assembly.
