A solvent may be infiltrated into the preform to distribute a tackifier material therein. The solvent is then removed and the dried preform is compressed to the smaller size such that, upon removal of the pressure, the tackifier material causes the preform to substantially remain at the smaller size.

A method and system is described herein for repairing a part used in a gas turbine engine, which has a damaged or worn lubricant layer bonded to a surface of the part. After removing the damaged or worn lubricant layer, a polymeric adhesive may be used to attach a replacement lubricant layer to the metal surface. The polymeric adhesive may be a film or a paste. In some embodiments, the adhesive includes a non-metallic filler. The polymeric adhesive is stable at an operating temperature of the part to which it is attached. In one embodiment, the adhesive is polyimide, which is well-suited for use in a high pressure compressor of the gas turbine engine that operates at high temperatures. In other embodiments, the adhesive is bismaleimide (BMI) or cyanate ester.

A coating for protection of airfoil surfaces from erosion caused by the impingement of particles in the incoming air stream of a gas turbine engine or on helicopter blades. The coating consists of an epoxy film toughened with hard particles to improve the erosion resistance and softer particles which impede the progression of cracks through the coating. A method for applying the coating is also described.

An apparatus and method for repairing defects in composite materials using a tapered disk sized to fit the part being repaired. Also included is a bolt sized to fit through a central hole in the disk. A spring is positioned on the bolt with a washer. A nut is attached to the end of the bolt and tightened to place pressure on the washer to compress the biasing device. An adhesive is applied to the tapered disk prior to engaging the composite material. A threaded bushing is used to fixedly attach a second bolt completely in the hole.

A substantially microcrack- and blister-free composite can be made by drying an addition-type polyimide molding compound under suitable conditions to remove excess moisture. The molding compound includes a mixture of a polyimide resin and a plurality of carbon reinforcing fibers less than 3 mm long. The molding compound is placed into a heated material reservoir and transferred to a heated molding tool with a heated transfer ram. The ram establishes a molding pressure in a mold cavity in the molding tool sufficient to cure the molding compound into the desired composite. The molding compound is transferred to the mold cavity such that the molding compound is heated to a molding temperature at a rate of at least about 85.degree. C./min. The molding pressure and temperature are maintained in the mold cavity for a time sufficient to cure the molding compound into the desired composite. The composite is cooled and then heated to a suitable post-cure temperature at a rate sufficient to permit residual volatiles in the composite to diffuse out of the composite. The composite is held at the post-cure temperature for a sufficient time and then cooled. The invention also includes an article made by this method and a vented molding tool used in the method.
