Abstract: A system and method for providing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) protection for a removable component through a retractable EMC protection apparatus. The EMC protection apparatus includes an actuation pin, a stabilizing bracket, an actuation arm, a spring brace, an arm spring, a second stabilizing bracket, a rounded pin, an angled engagement feature, an enclosure opening, a conductive surface, a protection device spring, and a retractable EMC protection device. The actuation pin is configured to engage upon a surface of an end product upon insertion of the removable component into the end product. The activation arm is configured to simultaneously compress the arm spring against the stop brace and to push on the angled engagement feature. The angled engagement feature is configured to push in a downward direction on the conductive surface to seal an enclosure opening of the removable component with the retractable EMC protection device.

Abstract: A differential transmission line cable includes a notch filter to manage common-mode energy. The cable includes a narrow portion with two adjacent electrical conductors each having a narrow cross-sectional area and spaced at a narrow spacing. The cable also includes a wide portion longitudinally adjacent to the narrow portion. The wide portion includes the two adjacent electrical conductors each having a wide cross-sectional area greater than the narrow cross-sectional area and spaced at a wide spacing greater than the narrow spacing. The wide and narrow cross-sectional areas and spacings are specified so that the differential-mode impedance of the differential transmission line cable is uniform throughout both the narrow and wide portions and so that differences in the common-mode impedances of the narrow and wide portions create a notch filter to manage common-mode energy in the differential transmission line cable.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to a computer-implemented-method of operating a computing device. The computer-implemented method includes using a local touch-activated sensor of the computing device to receive an input signal, wherein the input signal has been generated at a remote touch-activated sensor based on capacitive coupling between the remote touch-activated sensor and a human, passed to the human using the capacitive coupling between the remote touch-activated sensor and the human, passed through the human, and transmitted from the human to the local touch-activated sensor of the computing device using a capacitive coupling between the human and the local touch-activated sensor. Functionality of the computing device is limited based at least in part on analyzing, using the computing device, at least one characteristic of the input signal.

Abstract: Embodiments relate to a method, apparatus, and system for passively detecting strength of an electromagnetic field. An electroactive polymer (EAP) is configured with an antenna in communication with an RC circuit. The EAP is positioned proximal to a sensor. In response to receipt of a transient electromagnetic pulse due to an electrostatic discharge, the circuit captures the received pulse and transmits the pulse to the EAP. The EAP reacts to the pulse in the form of a deflection. The magnitude of the deflection correlates to the field strength which caused the received pulse. As deflection of the EAP is communicated to the proximally positioned sensor, a recording of the electrostatic discharge takes place.

Abstract: An apparatus has a permittivity attenuation layer interposed between a substrate and a first conductive trace, wherein the permittivity attenuation layer comprises a resin matrix containing functionalized carbon nanomaterial, such as functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes (f-SWNTs). In some embodiments, a design structure for designing, manufacturing, or testing the apparatus is tangibly embodied in a machine readable medium. In some embodiments, the apparatus comprises an enhanced laminate core for use in a printed wiring board (PWB) that contains a differential pair having an inner-leg conductive trace and an outer-leg conductive trace. A permittivity attenuation layer is interposed between the inner-leg conductive trace and a laminate core, wherein the loading level of f-SWNTs in the permittivity attenuation layer is selected to attenuate the permittivity of the inner-leg conductive trace to match the permittivity of the outer-leg conductive trace.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling an EMC protection apparatus in a removable component. The removable component is inserted into an end product. As a result of the insertion power is applied to the EMC protection apparatus. A determination is made as to whether a power good signal is detected within the removable component. In response to a power good signal, an EMC protection device is rotated from a retracted state to an engaged state such that the EMC protection device is placed over an enclosure opening in the removable component forming an EMC seal. Full functionality of the removable component can be delayed until such time as the rotation is completed.

Abstract: An apparatus for providing a safety and EMC compliant heat sink. The apparatus includes a heat sink configured to be attached to an internal power plane of a printed circuit board (PCB). The heat sink includes a plurality of fins extending outward from the heat sink. The apparatus further includes a compliance cage configured to be connected to a ground portion of the PCB, the compliance cage surrounding at least a portion of the heat sink. At least one capacitor plate contacting at least a portion of the compliance cage and extending inwards towards the heat sink and interleaving with the plurality of fins is present. Dielectric spacers are provided to fill a portion of the space between the capacitor plates and the heat sink fins.

Abstract: A system and a method of providing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) protection. A removable component is inserted into an end product. The removable component includes a retractable EMC protection apparatus. In response to the insertion of the removable component a shape memory alloy on the EMC protection apparatus is heated to a temperature above the activation temperature of the shape memory alloy. The shape memory alloy then changes from a first shape to a second shape in response to the heating. In response to the change in the shape of the shape memory alloy an EMC protection component of the EMC protection apparatus is inserted into an enclosure opening of the removable component.
