    Abstract: An apparatus for guiding a flexible instrument includes a first plurality of linkages forming a first side of a channel of a support assembly and a second plurality of linkages forming a second side opposite the first side. In an elongated configuration, each linkage of the first plurality of linkages is interlocked between two adjacent linkages of the second plurality of linkages. Each linkage of the first plurality of linkages is hingedly coupled to an adjacent linkage of the first plurality by a bridging element that maintains a spacing between each linkage of the first plurality of linkages and each respective adjacent linkage. The support assembly transitions from the elongated configuration to a separated configuration as the support assembly is advanced along a longitudinal axis defined by the channel. In the separated configuration, each linkage of the first plurality of linkages is unlocked from between the two adjacent linkages.

    Abstract: A method for operating a medical device includes measuring a configuration of a tube, receiving a desired configuration of the tube, determining an actuation input to bend the tube to the desired configuration, and transmitting the actuation input to at least one force transmission element that is actuatable to alter the tube between a flexible state and a stiffened state. Altering the tube from the flexible state to the stiffened state includes simultaneously applying first and second tension forces to first and second force transmission elements, respectively, to compress and shorten a length of the tube. The method further includes receiving a first command to place the tube in the flexible state, reducing longitudinal compression on the tube in response to the first command, receiving a second command to place the tube in the stiffened state, and longitudinally compressing the tube in response to the second command.

    Abstract: A manipulator for a surgical instrument may comprise an instrument holder coupled with the surgical instrument and rotatable in a plane that passes through a remote center. The manipulator may also comprise a linkage assembly coupled to the instrument holder to limit motion of the instrument holder to rotation about an axis that intersects the remote center. The linkage assembly may comprise a first linkage arm comprising first and second pulleys. Each pulley may comprise first and second drive tracks which are substantially co-planar. The first linkage arm may also comprise a first drive member section extending between the first drive tracks of the pulleys and a second drive member section extending between the second drive tracks of the pulleys. The first drive member section may be wound around the first pulley in a first direction and the second drive member section may be wound around the first pulley in an opposite direction.
