The present invention relates to a process for preparing pure bis(isocyanatoalkyl)monouretdiones corresponding to formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R represents identical or different, linear or branched alkyl groups having 4 to 9 carbon atoms, by oligomerizing at least a portion of the isocyanate groups of aliphatic diisocyanates in the presence of catalysts which accelerate the dimerization of isocyanate groups, terminating the reaction at the desired degree of oligomerization, removing unreacted excess diisocyanate by extraction or thin film distillation to obtain a distillation residue, subjecting the distillation residue to thin film distillation at a temperature of 160.degree. to 220.degree. C. and a pressure of 0.01 to 1.0 mbar and obtaining bis(isocyanato-alkyl)monouretdiones corresponding to formula (I) as the distillate. The present invention also relates to the resulting bis(isocyanato-alkyl)monouretdiones corresponding to formula I and to their use for the production of polyisocyanate addition products, in particular as the isocyanate components in polyurethane coatings compositions, in which the isocyanate groups may optionally be present in blocked form.

C. and(B) a organic polyhydroxyl component in powder form which is solid below about 40.degree. C. and liquid above about 150.degree. C.,components (A) and (B) being present in quantities corresponding to an equivalent ratio of isocyanate groups to hydroxyl groups of about 0.6:1 to 1.2:1, characterized in that component (A) is based on a polyisocyanate or polyisocyanate mixture which(a) does not contain any blocking agents for isocyanate groups,(b) has a content of free isocyanate groups (expressed as NCO) attached to tertiary, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carbon atoms of about 8 to 24% by weight and an average NCO functionality of at least 2.1,(c) has a urethane group content (expressed as --NH--CO--O--) of about 3 to 30% by weight and(d) has an isocyanurate group content (expressed as C.sub.3 N.sub.3 O.sub.3) of 0 to about 30% by weight.The present invention also relates to the use of this powder lacquer for the production of coatings on heat-resistant substrates by methods known in powder lacquer technology.

A process is described for the preparation of predominantly linear polyurethane solutions which comprises(a) reacting(A) an organic diisocyanate or diisocyanate mixture optionally containing small portions of a triisocyanate with(B) one or more polyhydroxyl compounds which are predominantly bifunctional and generally have molecular weights of from about 400 to 5000 and(C) optionally one or more chain lengthening agents having at least two isocyanate reactive hydrogen atoms and molecular weights of from about 32 to 399, wherein the proportion of isocyanate groups to the number of isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms is in the range of from about 0.9:1 to 1:0.9, and(b) when the polyurethane formed has reached the required viscosity, adding a monofunctional, low molecular weight oxime having a molecular weight of from about 73 to 325, preferably butanone oxime, to the reaction mixture as chain breaking agent in a quantity equivalent to or in excess of the equivalents of unreacted isocyanate groups.The new chain breaking agents are simple compounds which effect rapid chain breaking and have no undesirable side effects as regards subsequent breakdown of the chains and even enable further synthesizing reactions to be carried out if desired, for example with diamines.
