摘要: A method of making a microlensed fiber by splicing a doped silica rod to an optical fiber and shaping the end of the doped silica rod into a plano-convex refracting lens. The doped silica rod has a lower melting point and annealing point than undoped silica, and therefor less power is required to manufacture the microlensed fiber. This decreases wear to the heating elements of the manufacturing equipment and therefor increases the number of microlensed fibers that can be manufactured between cycles. A further aspect of the present invention is a microlensed fiber made by the above process.

摘要: Disclosed are systems for scoring non-flat materials including non-flat glass sheets (1000). In one embodiment, a laser scoring system is described. The laser scoring system includes a laser (102) and an optical head (106). The optical head (106) is configured to receive output from the laser (102) and focus the output into an elongated laser beam having a beam waist and an extended focal depth of greater than +/−5 mm relative to the center of the beam waist with a power density sufficient for scoring a material having at least a portion within the extended focal depth. In one aspect the system can include a beam expander (104). The beam expander (104) receives the output from the laser (102), expands the output from the laser to an expanded laser beam, and transmits the expanded laser beam to the optical head (106).

摘要: A flat glass sheet and a mold having a mold cavity defined by a shaping surface are provided. The shaping surface has a surface profile of a shaped glass article. At least one edge alignment pin is provided on the mold at an edge of the shaping surface. The glass sheet is leaned against the edge of the shaping surface such that an edge of the glass sheet abuts the edge alignment pin. The glass sheet is then heated. The glass sheet is sagged onto the shaping surface of the mold so that the glass assumes the surface profile of the shaped glass article and thereby form the shaped glass article. The edge alignment pin aligns the edge of the glass sheet with the mold cavity as the glass sheet sags onto the shaping of the mold. The shaped glass article is removed from the mold.

摘要: A method of making a shaped glass article includes applying a compression load to a surface of a glass sheet such that the compression load is distributed along a non-quality area of the glass sheet, wherein said non-quality area of the glass sheet circumscribes and adjoins one or more quality areas of the glass sheet. The method further includes holding the compression load against the surface of the glass sheet for a predetermined time during which a thickness of the glass sheet beneath the non-quality area decreases and the quality area protrudes outwardly relative to the surface of the glass sheet to form the shaped glass article.

摘要: A substrate includes an opaque chrome coating on a surface of the substrate dry-etched to form an aperture, wherein chrome in the aperture is below detectable limit. A method of forming an opaque chrome coating on a substrate includes depositing an initial thickness of the opaque chrome coating on the substrate without ion-assist or with undetectable ion-assist and depositing the remainder of the opaque chrome coating with or without ion-assist. In one embodiment the invention is directed to an apertured optical element having a substrate transmissive to light and an opaque chrome coating on the substrate defining an aperture. Three- and four-layer opaque coatings of various materials are disclosed, including three-layer chrome/chrome oxide/chrome coatings.

摘要: An apparatus for edge processing of a glass sheet, the apparatus including a shroud, a finishing member and a wiping device. The finishing member is substantially enclosed by the shroud. The apparatus uses pressurized air emitted by at least one slot in the wiping device to prevent contaminants resulting from the edge processing from settling on and/or adhering to surfaces of the glass sheet. The wiping device may include a jet of washing fluid directed at the glass sheet to further wash the surfaces and the processed edge of the glass sheet.

摘要: A relatively facile, inexpensive method for patterning a layer of glass or a substrate involves patterning a seed material containing a nucleating agent adjacent a layer of thermally crystallizable glass and heart treating the seed material and the layer of thermally crystallizable glass to induce highly oriented crystal growth from the seed material through the thickness of the thermally crystallizable glass layer at selected portions thereof. After the heart treatment, the layer of thermally crystallizable glass is converted into a desired pattern of glass surrounded by crystalline material. The crystalline material is removed with an etchant to leave a desired glass pattern.
