摘要: A method for reducing the peak-to-average ratio in an OFDM communication signal is provided. The method includes defining a constellation having a plurality of symbols, defining a symbol duration for the OFDM communication signal, and defining a plurality of time instants in the symbol duration. A plurality of tones are allocated to a particular communication device, and a discrete signal is constructed in the time domain by mapping symbols from the constellation to the time instants. A continuous signal is generated by applying an interpolation function to the discrete signal such that the continuous signal only includes sinusoids having frequencies which are equal to the allocated tones.

摘要: The use of multiple states of mobile communication device operation to allow a single base station to support a relatively large number of mobile nodes is described. The various states require different amounts of communications resources, e.g., bandwidth. Four supported states of operation are an on-state, a hold-state, a sleep-state, and an access-state. Each mobile node in the on-state is allocated communication resources to perform transmission power control signaling, transmission timing control signaling and to transmit data as part of a data uplink communications operation. Each mobile node in the hold-state is allocated communication resources to perform transmission timing control signaling and is provided a dedicated uplink for requesting a state transition and a shared resource for transmitting acknowledgements. In the sleep state a mobile node is allocated minimal resources and does not conduct power control signaling or timing control signaling. Data may be received in the on and hold states.

摘要: The invention describes methods and apparatus to structure the air link resources, e.g. traffic channel, into segments of different transmission segment types and effectively use that novel structure. Different segment types are structured to achieve different performance characteristics. The segments may be aligned with different offsetting start times chosen to minimize the variation in the maximum number of segments starting at any given time slot. This staggering of segment start times minimizes waste in unused assignment messages due to structural inefficiencies, and has an overall effect of balancing the traffic. Information collected on the channel quality that various user's are experiencing may be used to classify the users. Stored information on different segment types, each with different benefits, is used in the allocation process to effectively match classified users to well-suited segment types to increase performance, balance the system, conserve power, and satisfy the users.

摘要: Signal, e.g., message, security techniques are described for wireless systems. A first signal is received by an access node via a wireless link. The signal includes a first authenticator that was generated by the transmitting device, e.g., wireless terminal. The access node determines from an attribute of the signal at least some information known to both the access node and transmitting device but which was not transmitted as part of the message content. The determined information was used by the wireless terminal in generating the first authenticator. The access node sends at least a portion of the first signal including the first authenticator and the determined information to another entity. The entity compares the first authenticator to a second authenticator it generates from the determined information and a secure key which it shares with the transmitting device to determine if the first and second authenticators match.

摘要: Location update techniques are described. A dormant mobile node updates its location information by sending a first message over a wireless link to an access node. The access node generates a second update message in response to the first message. The second message includes a mobile node identifier and, in some embodiments is directed to the mobile node. The second message is received by a tracking agent, which updates location information corresponding to the mobile node. In the case where second message is an IP message and is routed to the mobile node using Mobile IP, a Mobile IP home agent routes the second message to the mobile node's last point of network attachment where the tracking agent is located and intercepts the message. The tracking agent may send a response message to the access node sending the second message.

摘要: Group communications methods and apparatus are described. Multicast operation is supported with the transmission characteristics, e.g., transmission power level, coding rate, and/or modulation method being selected to reliably communicate information to the end nodes in the group but not necessarily to all end nodes within the cell or sector. Thus resources can be conserved by matching transmission requirements with information on the requirements of one or more group members. The requirements for reliably reaching the end node with the worst channel conditions can, and in some embodiments is, used to determine the group transmission requirements. Power level and other transmission resource allocations can change in response to changes in group membership and/or conditions corresponding to existing group members.

摘要: Group communications methods and apparatus are described. Multiple modes of group communications signaling are supported. In a first mode, copies of packets are separately transmitted to each group member in a sector or cell. In a second mode a copy of a packet is directed to multiple group members at the same time. Transitions between the two modes may be determined as a function of the cost of operating in each of the modes in terms of system cost and/or the number of group members in a cell or sector being serviced by a transmitter.

摘要: In an ad hoc peer-to-peer type network during peer discovery, information relating to users of various devices is broadcast to other devices in the network, which can compromise privacy of the users. Instead of announcing a public identifier that might be known by a multitude of individuals, the user device announces a private identifier that might be known to, or determined by, a select few individuals. The individuals selected can be given a key to determine the private identifier associated with a public identifier, or vice versa, wherein that key can have a validity range or a period of time, after which the key expires. Prior to the expiration of the key, the selected individuals, through their respective devices, can detect a corresponding user and/or device by the current private identifier being announced, thus mitigating the number of people that are aware of the user's presence.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for wireless communications in regional networks, e.g., ad hoc peer to peer networks, are described. Wireless communications devices transmit and monitor for presence indicator signals broadcast from other peer communications devices in its local vicinity. A wireless communications device maintains a list of discovered devices in its vicinity. A first wireless communications device transmits a paging signal directly over an airlink to a second communications device, which is on its list and to which it desires to send data units, e.g., user data in a peer to peer traffic segment. In response to a received paging response signal from the second device, the first device transmits data units, intended for the second device, to a third device, which acts as an intermediary node. The power level for the data unit signal is controlled to be lower than the power level used for the paging signal. FIG. 4

摘要: Techniques for efficiently sending reports in a wireless communication system are described. Reports may be sent repetitively in accordance with a reporting format. A terminal receives an assignment of a control channel used to send reports and determines a reporting format to use based on the assignment. The reporting format indicates a specific sequence of reports sent in specific locations of a control channel frame. The terminal generates a set of reports for each reporting interval and arranges the set of reports in accordance with the reporting format. The terminal repetitively sends a plurality of sets of reports in a plurality of reporting intervals. Reports may also be sent adaptively based on operating conditions. An appropriate reporting format may be selected based on the operating conditions of the terminal, which may be characterized by environment (e.g., mobility), capabilities, QoS, and/or other factors.
