    摘要: An electrostatically actuated micromirror light modulator that exhibits increased deflection range, better charge efficiency and improved electrostatic stability. A thin insulating membrane decouples the electron beam from the micromirror array inside the vacuum cell. The membrane is just thick enough to stop the incident electrons from penetrating through to the mirrors but is thin enough to maintain resolution of the deposited charge pattern. An equipotential layer beneath the mirror array prevents any attractive force from being developed due to the accumulation of static charge on the surface of the light modulator that may otherwise cause the mirror to snap-over and become stuck to the substrate.

    摘要: Electrode surfaces are coated with a passivating material (silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide or titanium dioxide) or with a reflecting material (chromium or chromium and gold) or with a special alignment material (carbon) using standard vacuum sputtering, vacuum evaporation, electrodeposition, or chemical vapor deposition techniques. After sufficient thickness of material has been deposited, the substrate is exposed to a broad or narrow beam of neutralized argon ions of a few kilo-electron-volts energy. The beam of argon ions is incident at a grazing angle to the surface, typically 20.degree.. Exposure of the overcoating results in a microscopic condition believed to comprise a "corrugated" surface with "ridges" and "valleys" parallel to the direction of the incident beam. These microscopically fine grooves or streaks are (1) reproducibly effective in causing parallel alignment of the liquid crystal molecules, (2) are durable to repeated cleaning procedures and air-bake treatments, and (3) are amenable to production applications in conjunction with vacuum deposition equipment.

    摘要: A high intensity light modulator includes a micro-mirror light valve target with electrostatically-repelled micro-mirror elements. Each micro-mirror of the target array comprises a base electrode and an overlying micro-mirror element. In operation, charge is deposited upon the micro-mirrors to produce repulsive electrostatic forces that outwardly deflect the micro-mirror elements by an amount proportional to the deposited charge. In one embodiment, an array of micro-mirror light valves is formed directly upon the face plate of a vidicon tube and is addressed using a scanning electron gun.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for transparent inband signaling during a telephone conversation provides an advantageous way of enabling a party to a telephone conversation to signal a telecommunications system to perform desired functions. A person signaling a system with a general inband signal, such as DTMF, can do so transparently, that is without the other party hearing the inband signals used. This innovation is based on detecting the inband signal, muting the inband signal to prevent the other party from hearing it, and determining which party generated it while allowing the conversation to continue substantially uninterrupted. The inband signal is delayed prior to muting for a short period of time in an alternate embodiment in order to compensate for the time delay in reliably detecting DTMF signals thus mute the inband signal more completely.

    摘要: A semiconductive substrate, such as a silicon wafer, is mounted on a baseplate for inclusion in an optical device such as a liquid crystal light valve. An optical flat presses the top surface of silicon wafer toward the baseplate and against an O-ring seal surrounding a fluid adhesive. The fluid adhesive hydrostatically distributes the force of compression to guarantee optical flatness and self-compensation for the amount fluid adhesive surrounded by the O-ring. The optical flatness of the semiconductor substrate is limited only by the flatness of the optical flat against which it is compressed. Parallel alignment of the optical flat, the substrate and the baseplate is achieved by reflecting a laser beam through the semiconductive substrate and observing the interference fringes therein, while adjusting the relative alignment so as to maximize the distance between fringes.
