Abstract: A lubricating composition, which is resistant to oxidation at elevated temperatures such as occur in engines and other operating machinery, comprises a major proportion of an oleoginous liquid as described below and a minor proportion of a bis-(aminoaryl) alkone and of a thiodiarylamine having the general formula wherein R and R1 are the same or different aromatic radicles. The oleoginous liquid is an ester, such as a carboxylate, a silicate or an ester of an acid of phosphorus, or an organic di-phosphorus compound, for example as described in Specification 705,224. The esters include polyallyl and polyvinyl esters, and also esters prepared by the esterification of silicic acid, phosphorus acids or dicarboxylic acids with thio-alcohols or thio-alcohols. The lubricating composition may include additional ingredients such as other oleoginous liquids (e.g. mineral lubricating oil fractions such as bright stock), other antioxidants (e.g. N-arylnaphthylamines or alkylated phenols), sulphurization products of unsaturated organic compounds, reaction products of polychlorinated paraffin wax with sodium polysulphide, additional corrosion inhibitors (such as sulphonic or fatty acids and their salts), extreme pressure agents (such as alkyl phosphates), friction-reducing compounds (such as allophanates), interfacial tension modifiers or foam-reducing agents, blooming agents, soap thickeners, viscosity regulators and detergents. Examples of suitable detergents are listed in some detail. In the examples oleoginous liquids mentioned are dinonyl isooctenephosphonate, trioctyl phosphate, dihexyl hexanephosphonate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, tetraoctyl silicate, tricresyl phosphate, bis (dibutylphosphoro) hexane, and hexanediol bis (dibutanephosphinate), bright stock also being present in one instance; bis-(aminoaryl) alkanes mentioned are bis-(p-dimethylaminophenyl) methane, bis (-p-diethylaminophenyl) ethone and bis-(p-amino-oethylphenyl) methane; and the thiodiarylamines mentioned are phenothiazine (thiodiphenylamine), thionaphthylphenylamine, thiodinaphthylamine and 4-aminothiodiphenylamine.
