A circuit is provided for over-driving a super-luminescent light emitting diode having a maximum forward continuous current rating. A power supply provides a pulse width modulated signal to an analog memory connected to the power supply and a pulse generator. The pulse generator includes a window comparator engaged with the analog memory, and is responsive to a portion of the pulse width modulated signal. A power driver that is controlled by the output of the pulse generator, is operably connected with the super-luminescent light emitting diode and with the power supply so as to energize the super-luminescent light emitting diode with a current that is above the maximum forward continuous current rating by between two and ten times that rated current. A signal is also provided along with a method of over-driving a super-luminescent light emitting diode.

In one embodiment, a common rail fuel system for an engine of a vehicle, such as a locomotive, comprises a higher-pressure fuel sub-system and a lower-pressure fuel sub-system, wherein a pressure limiting valve, is in fluid communication with to the higher-pressure fuel sub-system to relieve excess pressure. In a condition where pressure of the higher-pressure fuel sub-system is below a desired and expected threshold, it is possible that the pressure limiting valve is open. An example method is provided to close the pressure limiting valve and determine if opening of the pressure limiting valve is the cause of the pressure being below the threshold or if a leak is present in the common rail fuel system. In this manner, unnecessary disabling of the engine is avoided and, if a leak is present, the leaking sub-system is identified.

A fuel injection timing control system for diesel engines operating at high altitude, including a sensor for a parameter of the engine intake air, such as engine intake air pressure or turbocharger speed. This sensor communicates with a barometric pressure timing controller, and a throttle position sensor communicates with the barometric pressure timing controller. Nominal values of the engine intake air parameter at various throttle notch settings and various engine performance parameters are stored in a table, for a nominal barometric pressure. The barometric pressure timing controller determines the instantaneous barometric pressure by adjusting the nominal barometric pressure based on the difference between the instantaneous value for the engine intake air parameter and the nominal value for the engine intake air parameter, at the known throttle notch setting and the known engine performance parameters. The barometric pressure timing controller then adjusts fuel injection timing in response to the thusly determined barometric pressure and the sensed throttle position, by advancing or retarding the fuel injection timing by predetermined values as the barometric pressure or the throttle position changes. The predetermined values of fuel injection timing are selected to reduce exhaust emissions and increase engine efficiency and performance under various barometric pressure conditions so that the engine may be operated continually and optimally under various barometric pressure conditions.

A system for interconnecting line cards attached to a networking hub is disclosed. The disclosed system operates by forming backplane networks between the line cards using shared data path resources within the hub. Each line card attached with the hub describes its hub internal networking characteristics and capabilities. A hub management agent obtains the specific capabilities and characteristics of each line card attached to the networking hub, from each of the line cards. The characteristics and capabilities of each line card include which of the shared data path resources are accessible to the line card, and how the line card is able to operate on those accessible shared data path resources. The capabilities and characteristics of the line cards are obtained by the management agent requesting each line card for the information. The request is initiated by a triggering event, for example power-up of the networking hub or attachment of a new line card to the networking hub. The management agent obtains the characteristics and capabilities of the line cards attached to the networking hub, and then backplane networks are created in response to requests received from a network management station.

An economical and accurate tilt switch, which incorporates a reed switch, a small disc shaped magnet, and an enclosed track in which the magnet is allowed to roll just enough to affect the contacts of the reed switch. Invented to replace the well known mercury switch, but avoid the environmental hazards of mercury poisoning. The present tilt switch can be adapted into many different designs providing a wider range of switching characteristics than that of the old mercury switch.
