    摘要: A process of making modified epoxy resins wherein a polyepoxide resin is reacted with a mercaptan compound of the formula HS--R--(COOX).sub.m wherein R is an organic radical having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, X is hydrogen or a moiety formed by reacting the carboxyl group with a basic compound to form its salt and m is an integer of from 1 to 5. The compounds are reacted in the presence of a tin catalyst to produce resins of the structureB [--S--R--(COOX).sub.m ].sub.nwherein B is the residue from the ring opening reaction of an epoxide group on the polyepoxide resin molecule and the sulfhydryl hydrogen, R, X and m are as defined previously and n is at least 1. The aforementioned resins are produced without the need of a hydrolysis step.The modified epoxy resins are useful in formulating coating compositions having excellent physical and chemical properties. The resins can be dissolved or dispersed in water to form aqueous coating compositions.

    摘要: The present invention provides methods for forming composite coatings on substrates including the steps of: (A) applying an aqueous primary coating composition to at least a portion of a surface of a substrate, the primary coating composition including: (1) at least one thermosettable dispersion including polymeric microparticles having functionality adapted to react with a crosslinking material, the microparticles including: (a) at least one acid functional reaction product of ethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (b) at least one hydrophobic polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500; and (2) at least one crosslinking material, to form a substantially uncured primary coating thereon; (B) applying a secondary coating composition to at least a portion of the primary coating formed in step (A) without substantially curing the primary coating to form a substantially uncured secondary coating thereon; and (C) applying a clear coating composition to at least a portion of the secondary coating formed in step (B) without substantially curing the secondary coating to form a substantially uncured composite coating thereon.

    摘要: Disclosed is a coating composition which crosslinks upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The coating composition comprises: (A) from 1 to 5 percent of a saturated, chlorinated polymeric material selected from the group consisting of (1) a chlorinated polyolefin containing about 5 to 75 percent by weight of chlorine and having a number average molecular weight of about 5,000-50,000, (2) a chlorinated polyolefin containing carboxylic anhydride groups and about 5 to 25 percent by weight of chlorine and having a number average molecular weight of about 5,000-50,000, and (3) a mixture thereof; (B) from 20 to 80 percent of a radiation sensitive monomer having at least two addition polymerizable unsaturated bonds; (C) from 0.1 to 5.0 percent of a photopolymerization initiator; and (D) from 80 to 20 percent of an acrylic addition polymer having at least one amino group and having a number average molecular weight of about 8,000-70,000.Also disclosed is a method of coating comprising: (I) applying to a plastic substrate a film of coating composition of the invention; and (II) curing the film by exposing the film to ultraviolet radiation.Also disclosed is a plastic article having directly adhered to a surface thereof, a crosslinked film produced by the method of the invention.

    摘要: Quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers and their use in coating applications are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are prepared from reacting a polyglycidyl ether of a cyclic polyol with a tertiary amine in the presence of a sufficient amount of water for the formation of quaternary hydroxide groups.The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are particularly good as electrocoating resins in that they electrodeposit without generating acid counterion. They are also good in other conventional coating applications such as dip, flow, spray and roll coating in that the resulting coating can be baked without the generation of corrosive acid.

    摘要: Resinous compositions useful as coating compositions comprise blends of hydroxyfunctional polymers; organoalkoxy silane crosslinking agents represented by the formula: R.sub.n Si(OR').sub.4-n wherein R is an aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, XR .sub.4 -- or ##STR1## RADICAL, WHEREIN R.sub.1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is a member selected from the group consisting of alkylene radicals of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and carbonyloxy radicals represented by the formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkylene radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, wherein R.sub.4 is an alkylene radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a cycloalkylene radical, or an arylene radical and X is a functional group selected from the group consisting of --OH, --SH, ##STR3## halogen, NH.sub.2 --, ##STR4## and NH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --NH--, and wherein R' is methyl, ethyl, 2-methoxyethoxy, 2-ethoxyethoxy, m is 0 or 1 and n is 0, 1 or 2; and cure accelerating catalysts. Hydroxyfunctional polymers such as hydroxyfunctional acrylic polymers, polyesters and polyurethanes are particularly useful. Organic acids, metallic salts of organic acids and organic bases are useful cure accelerating catalysts.
