Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a stable aqueous composition comprising an aqueous component, a hydrophobic complex comprised of a multivalent metal salt complexed with nanocellulose fibers and lignin, with the composition exhibiting a viscosity sufficient to prevent coalescing and settling of the hydrophobic complex in the aqueous component. The composition may be used to coat surfaces of articles to produce a hydrophobic surface. Once applied to the surface, the aqueous coating is spread to form a wet film covering the surface and is then dewatered and dried to produce a dried hydrophobic coating.
Abstract:
Multifunctional coating films that can be applied in liquid form are provided for compressing, sealing, covering and preserving surfaces. The films include a composition of polysaccharide materials and/or homo- or heteroglycan water-soluble polysaccharide derivatives, polyol spacers, and crosslinkers with carbonyl or carboxylic function(s). As-applied, the composition is water-soluble and reactive, but after hardening it is capable of absorbing water or swelling, impermeable to water vapour, stable against water and UV and can be biologically degraded in a controlled manner. By reacting polysaccharide materials, polysaccharide derivatives and polyol spacers with cross linkers having carbonyl or carboxylic function(s), mechanically stable flexible films are obtained, which retain their mechanical properties up to a foreign material content of 80%. The films can swell in a controlled manner and can bind up to 75% water relative to their dry weight, corresponding to the degree of crosslinking and the spacer that is used.
Abstract:
A method is provided for effecting a color change in wood or a wood-grained article, and the article prepared thereby. The method includes the steps of applying to a nitrocellulose-finished wood article a composition that includes a water-based dye or pigment and a water-based varnish or lacquer over the nitrocellulose coating, without physically or chemically stripping the nitrocellulose layer. In an alternative embodiment, a wood-grained article is refinished by application of the water-based dye or pigment and a water-based varnish or Lacquer to its surface.
Abstract:
Compositions and methods are provided for forming a coated wood product having the appearance and texture of wood grain, which conceals joints on the wood surface and which is capable of accepting conventional wood stain.

Abstract:
A method for applying a barrier to a structure to prevent the infiltration of pest species includes providing a composition and associating the coating composition with the structure. The composition is formed from a polymer component having dispersed therein beads formed from colloidal clay and adsorbed pest control agent. Colloidal clays (e.g., nano-clays) adsorb more pest control agent that do standard clays and releases the adsorbed pest control agent at a slower rate than do standard clays.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an agent for protecting a material, especially a wood protection agent. The inventive agent is based on a polymer or resin, with a waterproofing agent and filler particles which are dispersed in said resin or said polymer. The invention also relates to bodies consisting of wood which have been treated with the wood protection agent and to a method for protecting materials that are sensitive to the weather, especially wood.
