An alloy formed from a boride of a precious metal may include crystalline nanoparticles of MxBy with M being a precious metal, distributed in an amorphous matrix of B or in an amorphous matrix of B and of MzBa.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a particle comprising a magnetic material and a carbon layer on the outer surface of the magnetic material. The carbon layer may comprise graphite, such as Graphite from the University of Idaho Thermolyzed Asphalt Reaction (GUITAR). The particle may further comprise a single stranded nucleic acid moiety, such as single stranded DNA or single stranded RNA, conjugated to the carbon layer. The disclosed particles are useful as nucleic acid sensors, PCR reagents, and in nucleic acid synthesis applications.

Abstract: There is provided a method of manufacturing nanoparticles comprising the steps of feeding a core precursor into a plasma torch in a plasma reactor, thereby producing a vapor of silicon or alloy thereof; and allowing the vapor to migrate to a quenching zone of the plasma reactor, thereby cooling the vapor and allowing condensation of the vapor into a nanoparticle core made of the silicon or alloy thereof, wherein the quenching gas comprises a passivating gas precursor that reacts with the surface of the core in the quenching zone produce a passivation layer covering the core, thereby producing said nanoparticles. The present invention also relates to nanoparticles comprising a core covered with a passivation layer, the core being made of silicon or an alloy thereof, as well as their use, in particular in the manufacture of anodes.

Abstract: A system and method are presented for producing metallic core-shell particles. The system includes the housing having a hollow interior configured to receive and hold a molten metal input, a carrier fluid, and one or more reagents. The system also includes a shearing assembly positioned within the hollow interior of the housing. The shearing assembly is configured to, when the molten metal input, carrier fluid, and one or more reagents are held within hollow interior and sealed within housing, shear the molten metal input into particles of an effective size so that a shell created on a surface of the particles via reaction with the one or more reagents prevents a core of the particles from solidifying when the particles are cooled to a temperature below a freezing temperature of the molten metal input.
