In a double-ended barrel engine, a compression cylinder and a combustion cylinder share a common axis, with a combustion piston and a compression piston being interconnected by a connecting rod. An intake flapper valve is disposed on the inner surface of the valve plate and selectively covers the intake passage. An exhaust flapper valve is disposed on the outer surface of the valve plate and selectively covers the exhaust passage. Additional cylinders and pistons may be provided. A compression plenum may be provided in fluid communication with the exhaust passages from one or more compression cylinders, and be in fluid communication with the intake system for the combustion end of the engine. A wastegate may be provided for venting the compression plenum.

An expandable piston rotary engine includes a core having a substantially circular periphery and central axis, and a rotor/flywheel mounted concentrically for rotation relative to the core. The core defines a plurality of cylinders spaced symmetrically about, and open at, the periphery of the core. Each cylinder contains a radially expandable, substantially cylindrical piston formed of a relatively thin web of material, such as sapphire or amorphous steel. The piston web material is coiled about its associated cylinder axis, and defines an internal combustion chamber whose diameter, and volume, vary in response to a relative coiling and uncoiling of the web in its cylinder. The inner surface of the rotor/flywheel defines with the periphery of the core, the cylinders and the outer surfaces of the pistons a closed space for a hydraulic fluid. Intake and exhaust valves and fuel igniters are associated with each of the cylinders. The core and other engine components are formed of lightweight ceramic materials capable of withstanding very high operating temperatures. By driving the rotor shaft relative to the core, and changing the valving to the piston chambers, the engine may be converted for use as a compressor or fluid pump.

The combustion occurs in a flexible container, preferably a thin walled metal bellows. The container expands in response to the combustion. This expansion is coupled to an output device to perform useful work, preferably hydraulically with a hydraulic fluid held in a rigid housing surrounding the flexible container. The housing, which can include the base, has a valved inlet and outlet for the hydraulic fluid. The system includes an arrangement to contract the container after combustion. Applications of this apparatus include modular hydraulic power generators, a marine propulsion system with water as the hydraulic fluid, an automotive-type engine with a conventional crank shaft, and a Wankel-type rotary engine.

In the European patent application publication EP OS O No. 102 441 a high pressure pump is shown which uses tapered rings (disc spring derivatives) which are clamped together as a pump chamber. The clamping rings required cutting into sections which is expensive and time consuming. The present discoverings now show that the friction at compression of the coned rings was very large. The present invention now discovers that radially flexible ring portions should be provided to the coned ring portions in order to eliminate the friction and to reduce the time and cost of the production of the pump arrangement. The invention further provides U-type pump elements which eliminate the clamping rings. A second pressure led into the space in the housing which surrounds the pump elements makes it possible to increase the pressure in the pump, for example, to double the pressure.

In an axial piston motor or pump the cylinder barrel is mounted on a medial shaft which has a shoulder which axially bears against the front end of the rotor barrel. The rear end of the medial shaft is radially borne in a housing portion. The front portion of the medial shaft is provided with a bearing member of an axial thrust bearing for support on a respective axial thrust bearing member in the housing. On the rear end of the rotary barrel an axially selfthrusting control body is provided to seal the flow of fluid to and from the cylinders of the rotary barrel. The control body presses against the rotary barrel, the rotary barrel presses against the bearing of the medial shaft and the thrust bearing member of the shaft bears on the thrust bearing member of the housing. As a result thereof the cylinders in the rotary barrel can be straight through bores. The manufacturing of the rotor barrel is thereby simplified and the flow acceleration losses of former sack-bare bore type cylinders are prevented.

A metallic bellows consisting of two plates and one or more annular arrays of resiliently overlapping curved flexible radially-oriented strips. Each region of overlap is sealed by means of a silicone elastomer which tolerates high temperature. Overlap resilience of these strips helps accommodate greater volume displacement and long life while maintaining adequate pressure sealing. This bellows can replace the common and more expensive piston and cylinder in an engine such as a Stirling engine where it can reduce or eliminate friction and leakage losses.
