Both higher corrosion resistance and paint adherence are given to film formed on the surfaces of metals by treating the surfaces with aqueous solution of one or more materials selected from the group consisting of water soluble vinyl monomer, water soluble high polymer and then irradiating ionizing radioactive rays on the nearly dried surface film. When a water soluble inorganic compound is mixed with the above mentioned aqueous solution, the film properties are greatly improved.

A composite dental filling material comprises a mixture of a finely divided, inert inorganic filler and the reaction product of an organic aliphatic diisocyanate and a hydroxylakyl acrylate or methacrylate. The filling material also contains at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, namely a bisphenol A derivative having at least two terminal acrylate or methacrylate ester groups. A reactive metal oxide or metal hydroxide, such as ZnO, MgO, HgO or Ba(OH)2 and acrylic or methacrylic acid are added to a liquid, hydrophobic, essentially solvent-free coating vehicle capable of being cured by high-energy radiation. The resulting coating composition, as compared to the vehicle alone, can be cured with lower radiation doses, is less susceptible to oxygen inhibition of curing with ionizing radiation and exhibits a thixotropic viscosity which prevents excessive penetration of the coating into porous substrates and contributes non-drip, low-flow characteristics to the composition.

DISCLOSES HEREIN IS A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF GLASS CONCENTRATE CAPSULES WHICH COMPRISES A PLURALITY OF STRANDS OF GLASS FIBERS ENCAPSULATED IN A COLLIMATED ARRAY WITHIN A THERMOPLASTIC RESIN MATRIX WHICH PROCESS COMPRISES: (1) WETTING THE STRANDS OF GLASS FIBERS WITH MONOMER; (2) SUSPENDING THE STRANDS OF GLASS FIBERS IN AN AQUEOUS MEDIUM CONTAINING A CRITICAL AMOUNT OF PROTECTIVE COLLOID; (3) AGITATING THE SUSPENSION USING A LOW SHEAR TYPE OF AGITATION WHICH MOVES THE WHOLE SUSPENSION MASS WHILE AVOIDING LOCALIZED HIGH SHEAR AGITATION; (4) POLYMERIZING THE MONOMER; AND (5) RECOVERING THE GLASS CONCENTRATE CAPSULES.
