Abstract: A coating composition for metal surfaces comprises ortho-phosphoric acid and a non-drying polar oil or fat, the ortho-phosphoric acid constituting from 1 to 15 per cent by weight of the oil or fat, the applied coating remaining in contact with the surface until the phosphoric acid content has reacted with the surface to a substantial extent. The non-drying oil or fat may be soya bean oil or "degras," e.g. wool grease. The composition may be applied by dipping or spraying and may be a paste, solution or emulsion. Suitable solvents are ethyl-, propyl-, butyl- or amyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, methyl-, ethyl-, propyl ether, butyl ether of ethylene glycol, ethyl ether of propylene glycol, benzene, toluene, xylene, turpentine, pine oil, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, tetrachlorethylene, acetone, ethyl methyl ketone. When the composition is applied as an emulsion, an emulsifying agent such as poly-ethylene glycol esters of long chain fatty acids, e.g. sorbitan mono-oleate, or polyethylene glycol esters of alkyl substituted phenols or aliphatic amines of from 12 to 18 carbon atoms or the oleyl and stearyl esters of triethanolamine may be used. After reaction with the surface the oil or fat may be removed by an organic solvent, e.g. ethylene trichloride, applied as a liquid or a vapour and a coating applied which may contain nitrocellulose, an alkyd resin or a urea-formaldehyde resin. When the metal surface is to be used as a bearing element of machinery, the oil or fat may be left on the surface and acts as a lubricant for the "running in" of the surface after assembly. p The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also compositions of phosphoric acid and waxes or mineral oils. The waxes specified are petroleum wax, ozokerite and paraffin wax. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
