Abstract: Cap adapters for a medicament vial configured to facilitate the transfer of liquid medicament from the vial and into a syringe. In one embodiment the cap adapter comprises a wall portion with a first lumen passing through it. A vial-engaging portion secures the cap adapter to the vial. A spike extends from the wall portion and defines a second lumen passing through the wall portion. A cone-shaped shield extends from the first lumen. The shield is configured to guide a hypodermic needle toward the first lumen to thereby reduce a risk of needlestick to a user handling the vial. In certain embodiments, a light source cooperates with the cap adapter to illuminate at least a portion of the cap adapter to reduce a risk of needlestick to a user handling the vial in a darkened environment. In certain embodiments, a secondary sealing member abuts a first face of the wall portion and seals an end of the first lumen. In certain embodiments, a locking sleeve resists or prevents removal of the cap adapter from the medicament vial.

Abstract: An apparatus for the handling of hazardous fluids includes a collection vessel, a collection vessel connector, a dose control connector, a unit dose container, a delivery control connector, and a delivery site access device. The collection vessel contains the fluid prior to dispensing, the unit dose container contains a predetermined amount of the fluid for dispensing, the delivery site access device provides access to an intended delivery site, and the connector attaches pieces of the apparatus to one another. The method of the invention allows needle-free connections to be made for the apparatus, using a predetermined arrangement of the pieces of the apparatus, and in one embodiment, employs deformable elastomeric valves capable of creating a decreased pressure at a valve surface, so that upon closure of said valves, a fluid on the surface on the valves is withdrawn within the connector.

Abstract: Fluid control device (70) including a housing (31) with a syringe port (33) for receiving a syringe, a vial adapter port (36) with a vial adapter (86) for snap fit receiving a vial, and a drug administration port (34) for administering a liquid drug. The vial adapter is intended to be rotationally detached after a mixing procedure for discarding together with a spent vial. The fluid control device additionally includes a manually depressed actuator (74) for sealing pathways which may lead to leakage of liquid drug subsequent to vial adapter detachment, thereby facilitating their use for handling and administration of hazardous liquid drugs. The manually depressed actuator preferably precludes vial adapter detachment prior to actuation, thereby ensuring failsafe operation.

Abstract: Disclosed is a uniquely configured medicament vial assembly which includes a storage vial, a stopper member and a securing ring. The vial assembly is configured to improve healthcare worker safety by providing a shielded gripping location to aid in the reduction of accidental needle sticks. The storage vial has a body portion which defines an interior chamber for storing a predetermined medicament and a neck portion through which medicament is received into and withdrawn from the interior chamber. The stopper member is inserted into the mouth of the vial and establishes a first seal. The securing ring is engaged with the mouth of the vial and adapted and configured for retaining the stopper member within the vial mouth and effectuating a second seal. The securing ring is formed from a thermoplastic and/or elastic material. Preferably, the securing ring is formed by molding the thermoplastic and/or elastic material over a portion of the storage vial and stopper member when engaged within the vial mouth.

Abstract: A piercing assembly for a fluid connector, where the piercing assembly includes a piercing member, a hub that supports the piercing member, and a disk-shaped flange connected to the hub. The disk shaped flange includes a plurality of arms. At least a portion of an outer surface of the arms is curved to enable the piercing assembly to slide within a portion of the tubular fluid connector. The arms of the flange may be formed in a curved shape, an S-shape, a tab shape or in a maze-like configuration. The arms may also be defined by a plurality of cuts or slits formed into the flange. The arms of the flange are sized to engage one or more flanges on the inside of the fluid connector when the fluid connector is in an activated state.
