    Abstract: A servo system for a braked accelerative transport in which a signal representing velocity of a carriage within the transport is compared to a first reference signal representing desired carriage velocity. The comparison yields an error signal which is used to adjust the brake of the transport. A hydraulic valve having an adjustable needle is used as the brake. A second selectable reference signal is provided so that the first reference signal can be bypassed when the carriage is reset at high velocity or is at reset.     Abstract: A circuit is shown for use within an optical scanning system utilizing at least two scanning beams for scanning a grating and a document. A high frequency reference signal is applied to a counter which also receives the grating signal. The grating signal is delayed by a counter to assure that the grating signal has been synchronized with the reference signal. As the scan across the document hits a reference target, a picture element signal is generated which is also applied to the counter. The counter is enabled upon receipt of a positive going signal from both the reference signal and the picture element reference signal. As the reference signal is a much higher frequency than the picture element signal, any error in misalignment between the grating whose signal is synchronized with the reference signal and the target is eliminated by the high frequency reference signal. A further delay counter within the circuit eliminates errors caused by the width of the target signal. An additional counter is utilized to assure that the scan line signal is terminated at the same point after each successive scan.

    Abstract: In a radiant energy beam scanning system, a detector, positioned at a predetermined position along the path scanned by the beam, for sensing the center position of the power distribution within the beam and generating a signal indicative thereof. When utilized in an information recording system, the detector is positioned adjacent the start position of the scan path so that the generated indicator signal provides a reference for system timing and synchronization. In such a recording environment, synchronization of the system relative to the center position of power distribution within the beam compensates for variations in beam power level and focus, assuring proper alignment of information recorded on consecutive scan lines. In a preferred form, a diode detector, partially masked in a cross-scan direction, is employed to provide an output signal when irradiated by the scanning beam. The detector output signal is amplified and filtered to provide a reference signal which represents the average total power of the beam. The reference signal is divided in half and supplied to a comparator for comparison with the detector output signal. As the beam crosses the edge of the mask, the detector output decreases rapidly towards zero. When this output signal reaches 50% of the average total power level, the comparator switches, creating the indicator signal.
