Abstract: Methods and apparatus relate to both generating steam for injection into a wellbore and capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) produced when generating the steam. A direct steam generator (DSG) makes the steam by contacting water with a combustion area for hydrogen and oxygen. Quantity of the steam made exceeds quantity of water input into the steam generator since the steam includes vaporized water resulting from combustion of the hydrogen and oxygen mixed with the water inputted and heated. Steam-methane-reforming or autothermal-reforming produces the hydrogen stripped of the CO2 prior to introduction into the steam generator. Further, an air separation unit supplies the oxygen to the steam generator.

Abstract: Methods and systems relate to recovering hydrocarbons from within formations in which hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs are separated from one another by a fluid flow obstructing natural stratum. Relative to the reservoirs, the stratum inhibits or blocks vertical fluid flow within the formation. Drilled bores arranged to intersect the stratum provide an array of fluid flow paths through the stratum. Fluid communication established by the drilled bores enables production utilizing a producer borehole deviated from vertical and processes that rely on techniques such as gravity drainage through the fluid flow paths and/or injection through the fluid flow paths.

Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for generating heterodyned seismic signals as well as methods of using the heterodyned signals and a system for generating the heterodyned seismic signals. The heterodyned signals can be used near sensitive marine animals because the source frequencies are ultrasonic and the heterodyned seismic signal is generated in a narrow beam.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for making carbon coated graphitic anode powders for use in batteries including rechargeable lithium-ion batteries wherein the process includes a side product isotropic pitch for use as a precursor in other products and more preferably, as a coating material for other powder or particle products. The process includes the steps of solvent extraction of volatile materials from high volatile material green coke powder. When a desirable amount of the volatile materials have been extracted, the solvent strength is altered to cause some of the volatile materials to precipitate on the powder particles to coat the same. The coated and solvent-extracted particles are then separated from the solvent and oxidatively stabilized, then carbonized and preferably graphitized. The volatile materials remaining in the solvent are valuable and are recovered for use in other processes and other products.

Abstract: A method of stimulating gas production from a coalbed methane well that involves injecting a foam forming liquid and an expandable fluid into a coal seam proximate the wellbore. When the wellbore pressure is reduced, at least a portion of the expandable fluid can vaporize, which can generate foam that aids in the formation and/or enlargement of a cavity in the coal seam proximate the wellbore.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus relate to reducing content of nitrogen-containing compounds within slurry oil using a chromatographic based assembly, which may not affect aromatic content, prior to feeding the slurry oil into a coking system. The slurry oil passes through the chromatographic based assembly to upgrade the slurry oil and make the slurry oil suitable for feedstock in making needle coke. Further, a hydrotreater utilized in combination with the chromatographic based assembly may provide additional upgrading of the slurry oil.

Abstract: A novel tar-free gasification process and system is disclosed that involves the partial combustion of recycled dry solids and the drying of a slurry feedstock comprising carbonaceous material in two separate reactor zones in a two stage gasifier, thereby producing mixture products comprising synthesis gas. The synthesis gas produced from the high temperature first stage reaction zone is then quenched in the second stage reaction zone of the gasifier prior to introduction of a slurry feedstock. The temperature of the final syngas exiting the second stage reaction zone of the gasifier is thereby moderated to be in the range of about 350-900° F., which is below the temperature range at which tar is readily formed, depending upon the type of carbonaceous feedstock utilized.
