Abstract:
An endoprosthetic shoulder joint device has ball and socket components held in captive bearing engagement and demountably connectable with scapular and humeral fixation components. This facilitates use in that the fixation components can be secured first and then subsequently interconnected by a pre-assembled bearing assembly. The bearing assembly of ball and socket components can itself be demountable, and these components can be interchangeably connected with the two fixation components.
Abstract:
Orthopaedic fracture fixation is effected by use of a tube with a spring extending through the tube bore and held under tension by terminal means which secure the device relative to a bone. The device can lie across the surface of a bone to bridge a fracture in the manner of a staple by using terminal members in the form of pins, screws or the like, and the spring tension can then serve to assist reduction of the fracture. Alternatively, the device can pass through the bone with terminal members held against opposite parts of the bone surface. In this case, the device may be one of a set used in threaded or other connection with an additional intramedullary nail or bone plate. Various mechanisms can be used for the terminal connections.
Abstract:
ALKENES ARE REACTED WITH ELECTRON DONORS IN THE PRESENCE OF COMONOMERS HAVING FUBCTIONAL GROUPS SUCEPTIBLE TO NUCLEOPHILIC ATTACK SUCH AS HALIDE OR EPOXY GROUPS. THE USE OF COMOMOMERS HAVING ONE FUNCTIONAL GROUP PRODUCES COMONOMER-TEMPERATURED ALKENE OILGOMERS WHILST THE USE OF COMONOMERS HAVING AT LEAST TWO FUNCTIONAL GROUPS PRODUCES COPOLYMERS.
Abstract:
A memory device consists of a material containing bubble domains, the state of the memory being determined by the polarity of the bubble domains. Use of a transparent material containing bubble domains is described, read-out being obtained from an image of the domains formed in polarised light.
Abstract:
In a sealed-off neutron generator containing tritium, for the production of neutrons by the D-T reaction, helium-3 gas accumulates owing to radioactive decay of the tritium and interferes with the proper operation of the generator. In the present generator a sputter-ion pump is sealed to the generator to remove the helium-3 from the envelope prior to admitting hydrogen isotope gas from the usual replenisher before use. The pump is adapted to remove only the unwanted helium-3 and not the wanted D and T, by having its sputterable cathodes made of, or coated with, a metal which has a low chemical affinity for hydrogen but is readily sputtered by helium, such as copper.
Abstract:
The intramedullary or equivalent stem of a prosthetic bone joint device is uniformly spaced within a bone canal during implantation using gap-filling cement. This achieved by using a spacer device having an annular base with at least three spring members extending from spaced points around the base, the spring members extending in a direction having radially outward and common axial components relative to the base. The base is formed to engage around and partway along the stem with its spring members facing forward. When the stem/spacer combination is implanted the springs act to centralise the position of the stem.
Abstract:
The invention concerns apparatus for use in investigating the distribution of radiation from an extended source of ionising rays and is particularly concerned with gamma cameras for sensing Gamma radiation. In normal Gamma cameras, due to the long exposure time, the sensitivity of the camera is reduced by spurious light emission from the scintillation screen. In the present invention the effect of this spurious emission is reduced by only triggering the image intensifier in response to predetermined values of light emission. This predetermined triggering is achieved by collecting the unwanted light emitted at the edges of the scintillation screen and directing this into one or more photomultipliers, the outputs of which are taken to a pulse height analyser which is used to trigger the image intensifier.
Abstract:
A piston adapted to carry a cam follower and particularly for use as a ball or roller piston in a hydrostatic pump or motor, comprises a piston body having a seating at one end, an insert of low friction material which is shaped to provide in the seating a bearing for the cam follower, and means for securing the insert to the piston body. The piston body preferably has a recess or aperture communicating with the seating and the insert of low friction material extends into or through the recess or aperture to lock the insert to the piston body. The insert is conveniently made of polytetrafluorethylene, nylon or an acetal material.
Abstract:
A compression-ignition internal combustion engine power plant is provided with means for submerged operating in the recycle mode in which a proportion of the exhaust gas discharged from the engine is mixed with pure oxygen gas and is supplied to the engine intake for aspiration and combustion with liquid hydrocarbon fuel injected into the combustion chamber, as an alternative to operation with normal aspiration of atmospheric air. Five control valves or valve groups are provided for controlling the oxygen gas supply, the atmospheric air intake, the exhaust outlet to atmosphere, the exhaust gas recycle conduit and the supply of compressed air for starting, and a two-stage electropneumatic control system of pneumatic valves is provided for operating the control valves in accordance with the requirements of the different modes of operation of the engine and for changing between modes. The engine is controlled to run in the recycle mode at a constant maximum speed under varying loads by control of the oxygen gas supply in dependence on the governed fuel input, or vice versa. The gas pressure in the engine intake is controlled to a constant absolute value by being sensed by an aneroid capsule which provides a feedback signal for regulating the speed of the exhaust gas compressor of the engine.
